I don't know that there is an enmity, but I think it's more of a competitiveness based on similarity. If you want to put em in their place, just say, "once a colonial, always a colonial." If their country had nads, they'd have given the Brits the finger like we did. I won't pollute this wonderful thread with football talk, but any of them that want to suit up, just send them to a league. There are plenty of US football clubs.
I gave up trying to argue with them, b/c they're always right. They're also decent enough people, so now I just shrug and ignore it. It just amazes how they feel compelled, w/o any stimulation from me, to tell me how much better footie/rugby/Australia is than anything else. I've made that offer but somehow, they never want to it up.

I just read a remark by the British football journalist Simon Kuper. He wrote that watching the Orange team play soccer is like being in a bar and Claudia Schiffer comes in, goes to you and rips your clothes off. You donot understand it, but it feels good
