The Packers/49ers NFL game ended 6-3 at the half, with 3 field goals scored. During half-time on the radio broadcast, the guy said: "This is Manchester United against Liverpool, it's all kicking." I almost freaked out! When have any broadcast of a mainstream American sport used soccer as a reference? Better yet, he didn't say "Earthquake vs Galaxy", or "Brazil vs Germany", but Manchester United and Liverpool.
Actually, I think it would have been a very positive sign if they had said "Earthquakes versus Galaxy", but, then a whole lot of soccer fans wouldn't have gotten the reference.
I look at soccer education of the US non-soccer masses occurring in 4 levels. This comment indicates that they are up to level two. First level of soccer reference is foreign national teams. Second level of soccer reference is foreign club teams. Third level would be national teams including the US. Fourth level would be club teams including MLS.
How do I get to Devil's Tower? There's a level where you actually make contact with members of an alien race. Oh, wait, that's a Close Encounter of the Third Kind. My bad. Sincerely, Roy Neary
Re: How do I get to Devil's Tower? Roy, glad that you're back. Any truth that you've been organizing matches in different galaxies over the past 25 years?
I agree completely. Why would you want to stiff your own country's developing league. We have always had a couple of "Manchester United fans", whose only connection to the team is that it's the only team they've heard of. We need to build awareness of our own league. The EPL is great, but they're doing fine...they don't need our help.
Yeah, since it was Green Bay vs. San Francisco, they should have said 'quakes versus rampage.' People woulda gotten that one.
