The Republic of Korea chant could be heard loud and clear on ESPN. So were those drums that were omnipresent at RoK games last year. I have a query, though: what are those drums made of that make them sound like they are made of metal or something? They are a lot louder than the usual snare drums that are brought to games in the rest of the States. I'd be interested to hear from any of the Reds supporters out there as to how the Korean drums are constructed.
I think what you heard were hand held cymbals that were played in perfect unison with the drums themselves. I don't think asian drums ingeneral utilize the metal or gut reverberation technique that a snare does.
Re: Re: Heard on the MLS telecast: I hung out yesterday with the unified Korean supporters section at the WWC in Philadelphia. Their hand-held cymbals are called "kweng gua ri," and they make a heck of a lot of noise. Their collection of exotic noisemakers are freakin' amazing!
