    that's a lot of games in 1/2 a season.

someone remind me: when they show a HDnet game, is that exclusive, or ist the game often shown somewhere else a la on FSW or on the Shootout package.

if they're not shown elsewhere, that's a lot of games most people won't have any chance of access to.

speaking of access: is HDnet shown only on Dish and DirectTV, or is it some cable systems as well?

    thanx in advance.

They will be available for local broadcast (and the Shootout) but not likely available for selection as a FSW game. A couple are already listed as local game son the Galaxy's schedule - one of the few teams with an announced local schedule so far.

It's on cable system. Mine (Suscom, a small regional outlet in PA) just added it. I'm torn now whether to lay out the cash.

HDNet networks are available on Adelphia Communications, Charter Communications, DIRECTV, DISH Network, Insight Communications, Mediacom Communications, Time Warner Cable and several NCTC cable affiliate companies

They also list area pubs that have HDnet on the website as well. Lucky me that there is one a block from my place :)

No, the game is not exclusive to HDNet. If the away team, or sometimes the home team decides to offer that same game on a local broadcast, then the game will appear on the DirectKick package.
Refer to this link to determine what cable and satellite systems carry HDNet. Time Warner is on the list but my local TW cable company does not offer it yet. They do say it is "COMING SOON."

What's the deal about some of these being on the movie screens?

When the dates are set, you will probably see information appear on this website:

    http://www.regalcm.com/

You can also buy tickets to Regal Cinemedia "Special Events" there.

All I can say is, MLS better ensure that these matches are covered on the Shootout or whatever it is called this year.

In practical terms: HDTV-only coverage = no coverage.

If these matcher are not included in the Shootout, I'm not sure thr 40% price increase is worth it.

From your lips to MLS' ears.

The Shootout was ridiculously underpriced last year. It's still a bargain at $69.

Let's see...150 games in the season.

    1 on ABC
    24 on ESPN2

    Leaving 125 games.

HDNet announced 23 games, and at least 6 of those will be carried by one of the two teams in the game as well (that we know of).

Let's say only 80% of the games that aren't on ABC or ESPN2 will be televised regionally and make their way onto DirectKick (possibly a low estimate, but let's assume - the MetroStars have all of their non-ESPN2 games on FSNY or MSG, while rumors are Colorado may do only a few).

That's 100 games. Now, because of overlaps, you can't watch every minute of every game without TiVo or multiple receivers because they're not perfectly staggered. Again, let's go low and figure you could watch 80 complete games without too much trouble.

For $69? It's not worth $.87 to you to watch an MLS game?

This is going to shock you, but you don't have a God-given right to see every MLS game when you want for the price you want with little effort on your part. Sorry, but that's the case.

I realize there are some people for whom $69 is not something they find in the cushions of their couch, but there are also some people who think it's worth $30 to have a signature, an avatar, an ignore list and a Forum Jump.

All in all, quit b!tching. Buy it, don't buy it, whatever. But don't whine about how it's almost not worth it.

Anyone recall the price of the shootout before last year's dramatic decrease?

The price last year was an anomoly, not the norm, and the "increase" this year just brings us back where we were.

IMHO, the reason the price was so low last year was that it took them until the last minute to get the package online and they wanted to build up a base of subscribers.

This year they've decided to do the free preview instead.

Then you'd better make sure that the Quakes front office spends the money to get the games on local TV.

Because they were the ones at fault last year that many Quakes games weren't on regular TV, even though those games were on HDnet.

IIRC, the last TWO years it's been $49, although the year prior to that it was $69.

At least that's how I remember it; I could easily be wrong.

    $50 yes. $69 no.

Interesting they chose the number 69 to charge people.

HDNet is a cable and satellite television channel owned by the owner of the Dallas Mavericks.

It is delivered only in high definition, and if you have DirecTV, you need to have a triple-LNB dish to receive the satellite signal at all.

If you had a triple-LNB dish, you would be receiving a blue screen with a white DirecTV logo on it on channel 99.

You also need to have a HD DirecTV receiver. That receiver can be connected to a regular TV through S-video outputs or to a HDTV.

If you have an HDTV, it may have an integrated HD DirecTV receiver, but you still need to have the triple-LNB dish and you have to pay the monthly fee for HD service (13 bucks IIRC).

Last year, the Quakes had 11 out of 15 road games on local (FSBA) or national TV (ESPN2). The Quakes FO is trying to get all road games on TV this year but for the last two road games, they are encountering scheduling conflicts with college basketball and baseball. (according to Chandu in this thread).

Last year, the Quakes also had a couple of home games not on the Shootout nor on FSW/ESPN2. The first Columbus game comes to mind: I watched parts of that game at the local Good Guys HDTV demo room. Ah, good times ;-)

I can't speak for what anybody else paid, but I paid DirecTV $49 the last two years for the Shootout.

As for HDNet, this is the greatest way to watch a soccer match on TV. The wider screen and incredible resolution let you see not just the ball but what's going on around the ball.

Last year HDNet picked up some games that nobody else was willing to televise, and a bunch of people complained that HDNet was keeping them from getting the game.

Never was true. MLS practically begged the media to take those games. HDNet lost money on every one of them.

Two years ago was the year that they had the last-minute agreements. They had a free preview last year too, IIRC.

Me: (7:30) I'm looking at getting one of those high resolution TVs. I really love sports, is there anything to see right now?

ABC Warehouse guy: Oh look, he're a soccer game, notice the wide screen, crystal clear picture...

Me: Wow, I really like this...can I play with the volume and picture for awhile? I've very interested in this.

ABC Warehouse guy: Sure, here's the remote, have fun.

Me: (at halftime) Thanks a lot. I'm going to shop around and see what else is out there.

(drives down the road to Sears)

You get the idea. I may have to do this a couple times this year.
