No joke... this special aired on CBS back in 1978. George Lucas was none too pleased with it, though it is considered part of the official franchise canon (good luck finding it to watch, though). You can read about it here. And here. And here. And here. And here. -G
I have a vague recollection of actually having seen this when it originally aired. My survival instincts must have surpressed this knowledge.
I remember watching this, unfortunately. Bea Arthur, Harvey Korman, Art Carney AND Jefferson Starship? Wow, that's quality entertainment right there.
I've been wanting to see this for a while now. You would think there would be a torrent somewhere on the net.
Holy crap.....like Claymore said this is something I actually saw but had totally forgotten about/repressed until looking at this thread.
I remember seeing it, and being very disapointed. That wierd cartoon with Boba Fett was scary. Please, everyone go to the Salon web site and search the archives for their article about the show. It was so funny it caused me to fall off my chair, hit my head on the table, die, and decompose for 2 weeks before someone found me.
You're not going to believe this. Last night, I was playing trivia at a local pub (a Wednesday night tradition for my co-ed soccer team) and I mentioned this "Holiday Special" to one of my friends. Lo and behold...he has it on tape (VHS) and is going to make a copy for me. Just had to post this after reading your initial comments.
God, I remember seeing this thing when I was back in high school. I was crazy for all things Star Wars, and this looked to be great. It sucked. I'd love to download it from somewhere though.
There's always newsgroups (USENET) out there... There's a really active Star Wars Binaries group that reposts this frequently, I'm sure they'll be doing it for the holidays...
The friend that I told you about who had this on tape made a DVD for me. It is absolutely horrible and pure unintentional comedy at the same time. The bizarre pseudo-erotic hologram that Idgy (sp?) Chewie's dad watches is slightly disturbing and the Jefferson Starship song was hilarious.....little did we know they'd go on to do "We Built this City"......or maybe we should've realized it. I haven't finished watching the whole thing yet.....my wife made me turn it off.
I don't know why, it's still better than "The Phantom Menace." I was 8 when this aired. I thought the Wookie planet was COOL!
This makes me simultaneously want to see it that much more and wary of seeing it at all - but in the end, I'll still watch it if I can find it. -G
Considering that both Chewbacca and his home planet of Kashyyyk will be featured in the upcoming movie Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, is there any chance that we'll see Itchy and Mala in the film (though I doubt that we'll see Lumpy, as he wouldn't have been born yet by that time)? -G
Oh, I definitely recommend it. It has so many of those "what were they thinking moments" which make it worth viewing. If you want....I'll see if my friend would be willing to burn another copy. PM me if you're interested.
