Even though the first game wouldn't be played until much later, today in 1993, MLS as a business was born. Dec 17th 1993 - In fulfillment of US Soccer's promise to FIFA, Alan Rothenberg announces the formation of Major League Soccer.
Was it really 1993? I thought the actual business entity was established after WC 94, to FIFAs disappointment. Either way, I can't believe that it will be the eighth season this coming spring! I still remember reading every USA Today article when the first season was coming. I must have read that season preview issue ten times(still the best coverage they have ever had)! I didn't know then we would still have a US professional soccer league eight years later. Even with all the ups and downs, I'm darn proud! (I'm getting a little misty...)
maybe the business entity was established after WC 94, just that in 1993, Alan Rothenberg said there would be a league in the US.
I'm pretty sure the idea for the league appeared a while before WC94, b/c, IIRC, FIFA told the USSF that they needed to have a professional soccer league in the works by the time the Cup came to the US.
