surely this has been mentioned elsewhere, but i have to give a big pitch for the mia hamm piece in the current si- a remarkable, unconventional bit of writing.

Does it cover the folding of the WUSA? I assume the printed article was for hyping up the WWC, and they probably didn't have time to cover the folding of the league. Then again, that's just an assumption. Is it a part of the story or not?

i'm sure the article had been written, but they did manage to get the wusa demise in there...it actually worked w/ the running themes.

Here is the cover itself. The local sports talk radio station was talking about the article, in relation to Nomar.

looks like, and was expecting another conventional profile, but it's anything but.

Oh well.. At least it came late in her career. :(

I sure hope we don't see Freddy on the cover until after we win the WC with him. :)

Posted this in another thread, but that is the best piece of writing I've seen out of SI in a while, and that is saying something because it is (and has always been) a very well written magazine.

I get the "Greatest American Sports Writing" anthology every year and I anticipate this will be in it next year.

i know this is a little out of place but:

is the WWC preview in this issue or not? i have the 'subscriber's edition' and can't find it (contrary to grant wahl's latest column).

Funny, I was thinking exactly the opposite. Phrases like 'sodden sentimentality', 'shamelessly manipulative' and 'dreadfully overwritten' kept bouncing around in my mind. Too bad too, because he obviously did a huge amount of leg work and other preperation. If he's so unwilling to trust his reader to get it, he ought to go into fiction, preferably something with low reader expectations.

i thought it a breath of fresh air from the dime-a-dozen athlete-profile junk out there...including at least a dozen i've read on mia hamm in the past 4 years. i predict awards for this one as well.

It's kind of hidden in a double foldin in Scorecard.

You might have skipped it thinking it was a foldin advert......
