thats actually pretty spot on. the "200" people is kinda a low blow but not that far off the mark. and it isn't exactly like mia hamm makes good press. i'm not really sure how she could but her personality is a bit drab. unfortunately with most of the people on that list, they're boring because they're good people and keep their names out of the headlines for all the right reasons.
Depends on how you like your sports stars...do you want them to have "flair" and the bad attitude that often comes with it, or do you want them to be "boring" but relatively good role models for kids? Hamm is the latter, which goes a long way toward explaining the demographic at WUSA games. She's the only female athlete actually noticeable enough to make the list, and I see nothing wrong with being exciting on the field and boring off it.
I don't believe there's any validity in that statement. We don't know, as we SHOULDN'T know, the time table of all of this. The press could have been reporting on things that were very much "old news" in regards to when it actually happened. Celebrities delay the release of that sort of news all the time, just so they can process the proper perspective. It's none of our business. She's a person. For all we know, she could have been entirely divorced from Christiaan before any of this Nomar stuff happened. Besides, they were friends first, and that is entierly harmless. And really...it doesn't matter. That's more getting into things that are none of our business. If it were a public "affair" (which I, personally, don't believe it was) to which countless articles were written in response to..then that's something. But, that's not how it went, so there's no point speculating crap like that. It doesn't matter. Don't read into and exaggerate stuff that isn't there just to make your point make sense.
Yeah...well I guess you could get dirt on any athlete if you want to dislike them. Kinda cheap though.
Mia I "met" mia during the hight of "Mia Mania" in 1995 at a U.S. event in New York's City Hall park. She was polite and surprisingly introverted. Personally I don't give two hoots about her personal life, other than to wish her well (Sorry Sports ILLustrated). On the other hand no one has more on field charisma than Mia Hamm. Did you see the crowd reaction, the buzz when she took the corners against Ireland. They used to say that Reggie Jackson striking out was more exciting to watch that your average player was when he hit a home run. Mia brings that kind of excitement to the game and soccer is better off for it.
I think it's a good list to be on. Better to perceived as "boring" because she lets her game speak for her rather than always be in print for all the wrong reasons. Anna Kornikova anyone? It's a testament to her character to not want to be a spotlight, media hungy hog.
The sport could reallyreally really use her being more social and proactive in getting more fans for the game. Hopefully this will at least be her role when she retires.
That SI article was infantile. It's just a young writer trying to gain himself some ill-deserved fame by trying to stir up some ***************. Mia'a on-field personality is very electric, she puts a lot of efforts into community building with her numerous off-field publicity appearances. All the SI article is saying is that she isn't controversial, well good for her. Frankly, I don't think she feels that she time for crap like that.
It's an honor for Hamm to be on that list, in that company. The article is a disgrace, and not worth the paper it's printed on. It'd be good for wrapping garbage. Of course all the people in that article are boring in one way or another. Everybody knows it. It's not news. Even more boring than the people in the article, is the article itself. Surprise, surprise: an article about boring people is a boring article. The concept is lame and SI is lame for publishing it. It's not like a "Worst Dressed" article, that can have funny pictures of people in really bad clothes. All a "boring people" article can have is boring pictures of people being boring. The article is more a reflection on SI than it is a reflection on the people mentioned in it. If that's the best SI can come up with, then they belong on a most boring magazine list. Actually, if that's the best they can come up with, they deserve to go out of business, the sooner the better. That article is yet another reason why I'm not fond of SI's style of know-it-all "journalism", if you can call what SI does journalism. Mia Hamm does not have a personality that's going to set the world on fire. Duh! She is self-deprecating to a fault. It's not like that's news. If she were capable of changing, she'd have done it by now. But a person changing who they are sometimes isn't that easy. In Hamm's case, it's not going to happen. Mia Hamm is who she is, as are the other people in that article. Who those people are is not all that bad, if you ask me. I respect them more than most athletes. And certainly more than the pitiful excuse for a writer who wrote that article, and more than the poor excuse for a magazine that published it.
Should we be concerned that no MLS players were boring enough to make the list? Or proud? On the other hand, it might be another indicator of how low they are on the radar.
OK, so that was probably the worst, first post by anyone. I was trying to say is let the girl be who she is. She doesn't like the limelight off the field. And, yet, she has managed to promote the sport very well. I don't know about the rest of you, but I would hate to be recognized everywhere I go
