Ok, Andy. Does the world hate Russians living in Australia, England, US, and etc.... post Ukraine? I certainly don't see this in America and 99% of people couldn't tell the difference between a Russian and a Ukrainian. And every Russian person I know here hasn't had any animosity their way. And before you ask if those Russians support Russia or not, nobody asks them. Same as how nobody asks people wearing a kipa or praying in a local temple if they support Israel or not. They just see a Jew.

There are plenty of Russians here in the Bay Area. But I have never seen any protests or harassment towards them. The ones I know are pretty much universally against the war in Ukraine - well, maybe except for the guy down the street who is a Trump supporter, and I think he's the one who lets his dogs shit on my driveway and doesn't clean it up - I haven't put cameras out front to identify who it is yet. Compare with reports of Jews being harassed throughout the country.

Wasn't this a supplemental package on top of the $3.5bn a year Israel gets?

Apparently lots of people waving Israeli flags at that rally, which pissed off two Jewish friends of my wife who also attended it.

Why did it piss them off? The Star of David is a Jewish symbol. Not many flags with a menorah or a dreidel.

For the reason that you claimed the rally was about:- anti-semitism as opposed to support for Israel. You can unambiguously demonstrate against the former without the waving of Israeli flags.

You seem to think you have to convince me of the fact that Hamas are bad?
Must be all of the pro-Hamas posts I have made in this topic. Oh!

I hope you stay to discuss this a little bit?

I've been posting on and off about this for years in the context of female journalists like Valenti and Lorenz. They get multiple rape and death threats per week, for the crime of <checks notes> being women journalists on the internet. For 'some reason' this kind of behaviour has been normalised in the US with almost zero consequences. See 2A protestors outside drag shows armed to the teeth. So people hide, don't share their beliefs/identity and keep their heads down.

Of course jews would be a target from left and right, and it was happening before 7 Oct. See when Elon Musk sicced the mob on his jewish employee Yoel Roth by accusing him of being a pedo. No one is going to be safe from this. I'd also add, I hear the same stories from immigrants who are not even Muslim round here, who look at that conflict, Germany's role in it, the rise in the AfD, and fear for their futures. Rightly so IMO given they announced deportation of actual citizens FFS. Trump has announced detention camps as well - how are any minorities feeling?

    But mah free speech!

Telling the difference shouldn't be easy, plenty of ethnic Russians live in Ukraine --and plenty of Ukrainian immigrants are ethnic Russian.

This is the thing you would hope Jews would know. The origin of the flag as you pointed out has been a symbol predating the founding of Israel by more than a century. From the banners initial design to what it is now. The blue and white, the resemblance to the talit…I knew this before I even attended Hebrew school for the first time.

Consider me re-educated. I knew the Magen David and the blue and white had religious significance.

I did not know that the two blue lines were religiously inspired and based on the Talit.

I had assumed it denoted two rivers, because there was some controversy about some proposed new Iraq flags when the Americans took over that were criticised for being israeli inspired, and those had two blue lines denoting the Tigris and Euphrates. (The designs were quickly shelved).

Either really bold or really stupid. Granted Gantz isn’t Bibi, he’s still pretty right politically at least based on his positions historically.

Well, that might be because the majority of Russians who live outside Russia and have thus demonstrated their rejection of it. Bluntly, you can probably take, not only their abhorrence at Russia's actions in Ukraine but also the fact they won't prevaricate, dissemble and woffle around what the Russians are doing. They'll just say it's wrong.

Let's put it like this... I don't think you'll find many Russians who live in the west who will claim, with a straight face, that the UN, the EU, the BBC, CNN, (well... almost EVERY media outlet TBH),, all the countries who vote in the UN general assembly to criticise Israel, (that keeps being blocked by the US), are ALL anti-Russian.

Also, I think people are rather forgetting what the original premise was... that America has had to be on the side of Israel to a quite LUDICROUS extent because of the massive proportion of people in the rest of the world that didn't like Jews and were utterly obsessed with Israel as a consequences and that that was the case BEFORE 10/7.

    THAT'S what I was questioning.

Americas involvement has been entirely counterproductive and has actively made the situation worse, not better, and that's been going on for literally DECADES, since the original attacks by Jews on Palestinians.

More recently there has been a rise in antisemitism AND Islamophobia outside of the area and it's largely a function of what's happened in Gaza and the occupied territories. It's unfortunate but that doesn't mean it's not true.

The spectator, eh? Boris Johnson's old rag, talking about BBC bias

    :giggle:

Yeah, I heard their editor, Fraser Nelson, detailing his theory about how immigrants are being used to cover up the large number of people claiming benefits which is, y'know... a point of view I suppose :)

He was discussing it with that noted politician turned 'broadcaster', (according to the Spectator), Nigel Farage. Two giants of British public life, both of whom know a thing or two about media 'bias', I'm sure we can all agree.

Cool story now if you think he or it is wrong and smothered in bias then feel free to disprove it and any other outlets that saw enough to go with it.

    From that article...

Collier focuses on a recent report from the broadcaster which seemed to insinuate that Israel was directly to blame for Palestinians killed on Thursday as food aid arrived in Gaza. The reporting relies on incomplete IDF video footage, Al Jazeera video and the word of hospital manager Dr Mohamed Salha. Its main eyewitness account, however, is Palestinian journalist Mahmoud Awadeyah.

I saw one early report on the BBC, (and on Sky News, IIRC), which I assume is what they're talking about, with a doctor, (probably the hospital manager, Dr. Mohammad Salha), where he claimed that many of the people coming in had suffered gunshot wounds.

The Awadeyah guy is only mentioned twice in the BBC Verify article so the implication that their report is based almost entirely on his statements, (which I agree are questionable), is simply a lie... quel surprise.

As to whether we should solely believe IDF supplied footage and NOT media source footage, (including Al Jazeera in this case)... well, that seems a rather 'unique' point of view I have to say, particularly bearing in mind the the Al Jazeera footage apparently agrees with statements from the IDF.

This is the report I saw some days ago and it seems a reasonable summation of what it seems occurred...

This is the version from Channel 4 news...

Of course, it's also worth repeating what's been said many times before.... that it would easier for the BBC, Channel 4, etc, to report what's happening on the spot if they were allowed in and didn't keep being killed, y'know... by accident

The simple truth is that the BBC Verify version and the versions from other respected news media, albeit while they don't agree with statements from the IDF, largely agree and are consistent with each other.

It's also noticeable that The Spectator DIDN'T seem to find any problem with the Channel 4 report, despite it being broadly in agreement with the BBC report.

I wonder why??? Probably lack of space I imagine :)

Your belief that cutting off aid is the way to get to that point is one I do not share.

And don't even get me started on GB News view of the corporation!

The fact that most news media that wasn't the BBC said pretty much the same but didn't have a story in the spectator says it all, IMO.
