Stories about UN "Peacekeepers" pointing spotlights at unarmed Bosnian civilians making a run for it across the Sarajevo airport, allowing Serb snipers to pick them off at will, still anger me. The smug amorality behind their actions shook me, hard.

In an article I just read about D&D turning 50 years old, there was a link to this old article that the IDF downgrades the security clearance of avid Israeli D&Ders. https://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3052074,00.html they are detached from reality and easily influenced

They’re OK at some stuff, but when it comes to policing/peacekeeping/conflict resolution, yes. Largely useless. Which is sad because that was ostensibly the whole point.
Sure--it's a big organization and some agencies are better than others. I hold the Security Council largely in contempt, but I'm somebody who wants to see the UN reformed, not destroyed. The UNHCR (UN High Commissioner for Refugees) was also on the ground in Bosnia during the war, and didn't share in the disgrace that was UNPROFOR or the Security Council's oversight.
No doubt, still close to 100 hostages whose condition we have no idea about, but if alive, their ordeals have been unimaginable. The families of 10/7 victims, all still grieving, same with thousands of families across Gaza and Lebanon. Gaza lies in ruins, 43,000 dead, everyone sleeping outdoors, humanitarian crisis as far as the eye can see, Hamas still fighting, Sinwar still alive...nothing really resolved for the long term Lebanon, on its way to looking like Gaza. Hezbollah utterly decimated, from exploding pagers to a bunker buster bomb finding Nasrallah...wow. I hope Israel can step back, reevaluate and reassess the situation, maybe even consider a little diplomacy. Instead, we're all still holding our breath, waiting to see if Israel will attack Iran, directly... ...I hope not. After 365 days of all-out war against its neighbors it would be nice to see a little pulling back from the brink.
It is. It's also my son's birthday. He asked me and the wife specifically not to celebrate his birthday. I just translated you sig. And that's pretty f*cking painful, too. I am sorry.
Today at noon the funeral for my far too young died nephew started. Noon on the first monday of the month is a special occasion in the Netherlands. All the sirens in the country start howling. That sound at that very moment not only brought tears in my eyes for my nephew, but the sound also was a fitting reminder of what happened exactly a year ago. As I mourned my nephew, my thoughts were too with those who mourned the loss of loved ones a year later and those still waiting for the return of the captured ones.
In Beverly Hills (which has a high percentage of Jews and a Jewish mayor) there's a commemorative installation in a public park. 1400 flags representing people who were murdered, most Israeli, others from dozens of countries, including 39 US citizens. https://www.beverlyhills.org/1448/Flag-Art-Installation As I walked around it, I heard a woman saying to someone on her phone "maybe everybody doesn't hate us." It made me want to cry. Lots of Rosh Hashanah sermons this year on the topic of hope, but hard to feel hopeful given the nightmare of the last year.

Mahmoud is Palestinian, Jules is of Jewish descent. After the events of October 7, that could have become – as happened to many people – a sensitive issue between the two. But instead, they decided to talk to each other. They understand each other's points of view and are now trying to convey them to young people. They give guest lectures at secondary schools in Enkhuizen.
From Axios' Barak Ravid (ex-Unit 8200) An Israeli official confirmed that Israel received information that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar resuned contact with the group's representatives in Qatar in recent days and conveyed messages to them. The Israeli official said that it is not clear when exactly Sinwar sent the…— Barak Ravid (@BarakRavid) October 7, 2024
Don't think I've seen it mentioned here, but the latest Caspian Report piece mentions Israel's intent in Gaza after this is done could be to divide it with 3-5 corridors with watch towers and forces to maintain security. One is already set for the war (Netzarim Corridor). They are apparently clearing the land on the south for another corridor. Pretty crazy stuff.
I'm still astounded by how hateful some people are in the pro-Palestine protests. I've only seen with my own eyes some of the stuff written in chalk on Mission St in San Francisco and some of Jewish owned restaurants/cafes, and to do so on 10/7 is just so reprehensible. Of course then it's hard to look at social media as it never gives a full story, but again, even if it's a minority, the majority remains silent. So much hate.
There is zero - repeat, zero - chance that girl was there and Hams intel didn't find out about it. That they did nothing says it all
@yasik19 @M Why do you care so much about what Antonio Gutierres says about anything? It's not as if anyone else does.
