Breakers Stop The Charge

Sounds like an exciting match. Apparently neither team had any of their international players. Great opportunity for the 12-18+ line-up slots to show their stuff.

I had to miss the game (and a trip to the Ommegang brewery ) to watch my son's team take first place in a tournament. Sorry, Breakers. Y'all have to settle for #2 in my heart.

1. INDUCTED: Shannon Higgins-Cirovski, the playmaker for the U.S.
team that captured the first Women's World Cup title 11 years ago,
was inducted Monday in the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta,
N.Y.

"It was overwhelming," she told the Women's Soccer Insider the
following day. "It was truly a special weekend for my family and me.
It meant the world to me to be placed in the history of soccer. I
still can't fathom it -- it's just so hard to believe."

Higgins-Cirovski, the head coach of the University of Maryland's
women's team, said her biggest concern on Monday was following Anson
Dorrance, her coach with the national team and at the University of
North Carolina, who gave a sizzling introductory speech.

"He did an absolutely amazing job, like he always does, with his
speaking ability," she said. "I said my biggest fear in life is
speaking after Anson. My other comment was -- we're in [the middle of
the college] season, and having three children, so I didn't have time
[to work on an acceptance speech] -- that I wrote my speech on the
back of my daughter's Dear Santa Claus letter."

Dorrance told the gathering that Higgins-Cirovski was so tactically
clued in that he saw no need to coach her following her sophomore
season with the Tar Heels, instead approaching her for advice.

Dorrance said Wednesday that being asked by Higgins-Cirovski to
introduce her at the ceremony was "one of the most special moments
for me ... a moment I will cherish the rest of my life. She's a
special woman, and I hope that came through in what I shared."

In the match that followed the ceremonies, Boston topped
Philadelphia, 2-1, on Kristine Lilly's 88th-minute goal. Sarah Yohe
also tallied for the Breakers, and Tara Koleski scored for Philly.
