The 2009 Player Induction Class will be unveiled during Center Circle Live at the NSCAA Convention, presented by Kwik Goal, airing from 8-10 p.m. ET. Hosted by Fox Soccer Channel’s lead commentator Max Bretos, this unique program will, in addition, bring together leading figures from the sport for a fast-paced discussion on the state of soccer in the U.S. “Fox Soccer Channel is honored to host the announcement of the National Soccer Hall of Fame Class of 2009 during Center Circle Live from the NSCAA Convention in St. Louis,” said Dermot McQuarrie, Senior Vice President and Assistant General Manager of Fox Soccer Channel. “It provides an opportunity for a wider audience of soccer fans to celebrate this most-important event on the national sporting calendar.” http://national.soccerhall.org/Induction/2009/elections.html
Just announced, the player inductees are Joy Fawcett and Jeff Agoos. I am so happy (and relieved) to see Fawcett make it. I just loved her game (intelligent, quiet but so effective) and for me in her prime she was the best defender in the world. Congratulations Joy!
Finally... congratulations Joy! It was always a pleasure watching her play. She could strip the ball from some of the best players in the world and make it look easy.
I am very happy for Joy. This honor was overdue. I'd forgotten that she'd played every single minute in 91,95, and 99. I think she was perhaps the best women's right back of all time and I have not seen one yet who is as good. And she did well when she moved to the center, too. The PR people overplayed the whole mommy thing but she did prove that an elite female athlete does not have to retire to have children.
Long ago I posted that if Joy didn't make it then they should close the hall. Congratulations Joy. I loved the person and loved her game. Thanks for the memories.
That was a real necropost! Surely we had a more recent thread about the Hall of Fame? But, also it seems strange not to mention Carli Lloyd as well: she's voted in to the Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility. https://www.nationalsoccerhof.com/news/2024/12/carli-lloyd-elected-to-hall-of-fame.html So 2 USWNT players in the Class of 2025, one on the Veteran Ballot and one on the Player Ballot.
Yeah, I did a search for any thread on the NSHoF and this was the only one that did not specifically mention the name of the other inductees. As for Carli...that article had not been posted yet to their website when I looked yesterday.
Carli was a no-brainer, and much deserved. She is a top tier HOFer in my book (Akers, Fawcett, Overbeck, Hamm, Lilly, Wambach, Solo, Lloyd, Pinoe, Ertz). Foudy, Scurry, Chastain, Milbrett, Rampone, and Morgan would be next in my book. Harvey in now means that the entire XI from 1991 are now in: Harvey, Fawcett, Overbeck, Hamilton; Hamm, Higgins, Foudy, Lilly; Heinrichs (c), Akers, and Gabarra. Plus Brandi. Ditto 1999. Scurry; Fawcett, Overbeck, Markgraf, Chastain; Akers, Foudy, Lilly; Hamm, Milbrett, Parlow (Cone). Plus MacMillan, Venturini, and Rampone. Lloyd is the 3rd member of the starting XI in 2015 to get in, joining Solo & Holiday. But Rapinoe, Ertz, Morgan, and Sauerbrunn should eventually join them. Wambach Rampone, and Boxx off the bench are already in. And Naeher should join them when the time comes. 2015 doubtful HOFers amongst the starters: Heath, Krieger, Klingenberg, Brian. Plus O'Reilly and O'Hara off the bench. Which brings me to O'Reilly. I am not saying Harvey is not worthy, and there is a ton there off the field. But I think HOR is the most deserving eligible player not in (Rapinoe, Ertz, Morgan, Sauerbrunn, Naeher, Mewis, and Press not eligible).
HAO keeps restarting her clock by playing. She played 4 matches in Ireland in 2022. (She did sign for a friendly between NC and Chelsea in 2024, but she didn't pass the physical and that wouldn't have counted for HoF eligibility). She also played for NC U23s in USL W League in 2024 which should be another addition to HoF eligibility.
