hello all.. i was thinking of getting HL2: Game of the Year edition. However, i'm hearing horror stories about Steam, and how you have to download an 'update'... and i'm on a 56k modem and would rather avoid that ;)

do you only have to deal with steam if you get the GOTY edition? or do you have deal with steam no matter what version you get?

    thanks!

It doesn't matter the version, you will have to connect to steam and download the updates (with your connection it would take hours). But I heard you can play HL2 without being connected to steam, but I never tried. As for CSSource, unless you use a hack, you will have to be connected to steam and the internet anyway.

Yes, you do need to connect to Steam, but I heard you can play half-life offline if you want. I got steam with all the Valve games, but there's not much fun playing off line. If you want a good single player game, try something like call of duty.
