Gold Cup is likely out but unless the fracture is really serious, he should be available for the Copa. Whether or not Reading let him go or he wants to be away - thus opening the door for the competition - is another issue altogether.

With the form of Howard did he have a real chance to be on the field?

Just heard on the replay of the game on FSC Marcus broke two fingers and not the hand. They showed him back in the bench and it appeared he was motioning towards his middle and ringer finger. Broken fingers are tricky, they can heal fast or slow but still I would bet the recovery is quicker than a broken hand.

There are two tournaments this summer. Howard is not going to be in the net in every single game of both.

? Arent they back to back? How would he be ready for one but not the other if they're like a few days apart.

Gold Cup runs June 6 through June 24th. Copa America runs June 26 through July 15th. Which gives Hahnemann an extra 3-4 weeks to heal. Copa America is supposedly not fielding as strong a team, which would probably give Marcus a better shot anyway (assuming Howard is #1 and others including MLS keepers are vying for the second spot).

Don't forget that Keller wants to be in the mix too, and since he is out of a job right now he could be available for both.

that sucks for hahneman but had no real impact on the US.

howard gets one tourney and I would imagine a younger keeper gets the other. he might have been on a bench if Bradley wanted to give Kasey time to rest/find a new club.

but as far as the nats go, this is a non-story.

Leave an MLS keeper w/ his team. Take Hahnemann for Copa.

Since the moderator saw fit to remove my article on the subject, I'll post it here.

    It's worse than we thought.

    Surgery Required

The operation required 2 plates and 16 pins. One bone was broken in 5 places.

    Get well soon Marcus!

Besides the fact that Hahnemann is not likely to play this summer due to his fractured hand, I'm looking forward to seeing Keller start for Copa. It'll give him a chance to prove he's still the best (or prove he's not anymore)....and though the following is history, and doesn't necessarily indicate what'll happen this summer.....Keller is the only US goalkeeper to do anything other than lose to Argentina....and not only did we win both games against Argentina that Keller played in, but he had shut-outs against them in both too.

Now, granted....those wins were back in 1995 and 1999 respectively.....and I'm sure some of you can't wait to jump on me for bringing them up (some probably won't even read through this whole post before doing so)....but before you do, let me stress again that even though those games don't foretell success this summer, they do indicate that Keller has (or at least had) the talent to do well against them....I'd like to see if he still does (as I've been arguing, I want to see if I'm right).

Also, he's been talked about a lot by some as being a good choice for Copa because of his experience and leadership with the idea in mind that we're sending a younger less-experienced squad.

According to Yanks Abroad, he's not going to either.

    http://www.yanks-abroad.com/content.php?mode=news&id=3126

"According to freshly appointed US National Team boss Bob Bradley, Reading star Marcus Hahnemann will be left out of Gold Cup and Copa America to give the burly keeper a breather."

"The coach did reveal that this decision was taken before the Royals backstop suffered a broken hand in their Premiership season closer."

"Prior to the injury, Marcus and I spoke on the phone, and after a long season for him we both agreed at that point that he would not be part of the roster for either the Gold Cup or Copa America," Bradley told a Wednesday conference call."

i do wonder how much time a usmnt manger needs to take keeping in touch with players, and their club teams.....

reminds me of the cherundolo situation last hex, where steve was given off several matches, and the reality was arena wanted him to focus on club play...

as to keepers, appears howard does gold cup, with keller doing copa...

with venezuela being more potentialy a cauldron, keller should be able to handle the environment...

i do suspect whomever backs up howard will get one of the group matches
