*I hear Guatemalan defender Gustavo Cabrera , 28, is scheduled to join FC Dallas for a trial following tonight's friendly against Argentina in Los Angeles. He made four appearances for Real Salt Lake in 2005 and has spent most of his career with Comunicaciones. Tonight he'll earn his 73rd cap.

[wonders] not sure why he has to "hear" it since it was on the FCD blog about 4 days ago and on 3rd Degree shortly after that. [/wonders]

He is an outside back, I don't think he is really a midfielder, I wonder why we are bringing him in?

    Guate fan here.

I've had high hopes for Cabrera for a while - his first tour of duty with RSL seemed a bit unfufilled and many of us couldn't quite figure out why he never got time (the few matches he played showed some possibility). He can play in all spots in the back - left, right or center. He has done this for the National Team often and has been with the National Team since he was a teenager. He's also the type of competitor that will bleed for the badge. He's the one guy on our team that we know will commit to every play and stay focused on a result every minute of every match, no matter how important the outcome is. He's a true defender (not a guy that gets forward as much). He's got good pace and and athleticism and wins everything in the air. Last night against Argentina he was one of the only guys who actually looked like a legitimate professional player - most of the team was utter crap.

I absolutely believe he is MLS material. Superstar? Probably not. Good defensive contributor with strength, experience, utility and commitment to the cause? Absolutely. If he gets into games he will earn the praise of his fans quickly because he works hard and gets the job done.

I hope for Guate fans that he can get a shot to play outside the country again. He's one of our few guys who can actually do it.

he was here training today and as far as I know he's playing here tomorrow.

  11. Gustavo is definitely MLS material. He had a language barrier while at RSL (or so coach Ellinger said) and never really got the chance to show off his skills. He is fast and tenacious. He gives 100% on the field and is really fun to watch. His only weakness is that sometimes he can over commit when marking someone. He fixes those mistakes by fouling the individual. I really like him as a person also and hope that he gets picked up by you guys.

great guy. great skills. i was around him for about an hour back back in 2000 when he was the "toast of the town" and right off of impressing all of Concacaf with his hard-nosed play vs. USA in WC Quals. he seemed intelligent, humble, and polite. let Luis Swisher speak all his English for him so it's easy to convince me there might be a communication problem. he seemed meaner when he had all the hair. according to my nephew, the ladies loved him in RSL. it was probably the hair.

This will be the place to come and fix that language problem. Plenty of spanish speakers to communicate, and, if I remember correctly, FCD has mandatory ESL classes for the non-English speaking players.

Was at the scrimmage earlier today and had an opportunity to meet him. He showed well in the scrimmage today (#4 in the back for those who were there). As far as his English goes... he speaks a small amount, and indicated he would want to learn more.

I believe that he's also the only Guatemalan defender taller than 5'8".

Is anyone else concerned that if Yi's not out there, our tallest defender will be 6'?

Then I'm guessing that Cooper will be defending on corners this season.

hhhmmmm a BORAT translation of the article on Gustavo from the http://www.camerinocrema.com/ link above shows promise ...

We can go from Clarence Bad-son to:
"Gustavo Bad-tempered will continue some days more than test in the team of the Fc you Mow of the MLS, by which requested to the board of directors the respective permission, which him has been given on the part of Management. " :D

Gustavo through an interview in Guatemala Radio stated that he felt great in FC Dallas that he gave it his all. He really is looking forward to staying with the club and is currently on his way to the airport. He stated that he had a talk with the Coach and he could not confirm him in the team at this point. Not sure if because of a transportation commintment he went back to Guatemala today but he is really looking forward to possibly getting the call back to join the team. He is a good guy and I wish him luck.
