Ted Sarandis has Gus Martins of the Herald on his show on 850 WEEI. Already had Steve Ralston on the phone. Ted says Gus Martins will be a regular visitor on his show to talk soccer. Thanks, Ted.
Thanks for the heads up. Sarandis is the only person associated with that station that has any class.
Gus Martins, a REV player who's name I missed because I was out of the room...sounded like it could have been Ralston & the REV GM were all guest on the show. Soccer Talk lasted from 9:00 to 11:00. All callerrs thanked Teddy for having a soccer segment. Sarandis predicted a REV victory, Martins felt the Galaxy were due Good stuff 'EEI ! Scott
Don't forget me... Highlights included yours truly calling in just before 11pm. Thanked Gus and offered that Sunday's game might result in a few generic sports fans coming into the light.
Ted was very supportive of soccer, though he kept referring to soccer fans as "fanatics." His main point was that MLS needs to do more to attract football, baseball, basketball, and hockey fans through marketing. Gus pointed out that MLS doesn't have a lot of money to do that. Ted also kept referring to soccer fans as soccer moms and ethnics. [My two sons and I are neither, and I was tempted to call in on that point.] Ralston talked about the Revs turnaround. He and Gus agreed that the turning point was the 2-1 comeback win in Chicago in August. Ralston said he was glad that Tampa folded because it got him to NE. Gus called him on that, saying no one should be glad the Florida teams folded. Ralston agreed, but said he was just glad he got here. Todd Smith also talked about the turnaround. Said the Revs had their eye on Twellman since last winter, but never thought he would be so good. Todd made a good point about youth soccer players never really developing a "love" for the game, because they only play in organized practices, not in spontaneous after-school sandlot games. I had to tune out about 10:15, so that's all I heard.
Ted Sarandis is an idiot, plain and simple. Last week he was agreeing with a caller about all kinds of crazy ideas to improve the game (timeouts, quarters, eliminating offsides) - as if he knows enough about it to have anything constructive to say. Do you think he'd be talking about the crowd being "soccer moms and ethnics" if he'd been at a single game this year? He's talking out of his butt like he usually does. The fact is, for the most part, the "ethnics" gave up on the Revs about 4-5 years ago.
