I haven't seen this out there yet, but is anyone else curious as to who it is? The clues 1) Central or South American 2) Has performed for his national team 3) Yet prior to this Ray mentioned the performance of a player on a surprising European team? at this year's World Cup so, my guess is... Pele I have no idea
Augustin Delgado. Used to play for Necaxa and took us apart in the 1999 CCC. Ecuadorian international who scored their only goal in the World Cup. Wasn't released by Southampton but transfer listed because they got frustrated with his absenteeism. Dave
I really wan't to care but after getting burned as bad as we did in the Gazza game I will sit back and be mildly surprised if we sign anyone... Leave it to MLS to even ruin the fun of player talk!!
The thing that confused me is where Ray says something to the effect of "he will come in, in part, as a favor to me." Who does he know from Central/South America that is a forward? I can't think of anyone that is out of contract coming to mind. Delgado seems like as good a guess as any. Prior to the "favor" quote above, I was going to guess Gomez from Costa Rica, though I don't know his contract status. Tim
Asprilla is in the news looking for a club. Newcastle connection. Could be. http://www.football365.com/All_News/Premiership_News/story_36958.shtml
I think if it's a favor to him, besides someone like Serna or APC, then it would have to be the European person he mentioned. Now we have to figure out between the "smaller" European footballing nations, who did the best, or perhaps who suprised the most. Maybe Marc Wilmots is coming.
Gazza with a long black mustache? I really hope the player isn't doing as a "favor" to Ray. That just sounds too icky to me.
I don't mean to sound pessimistic here, but why is Ray bothering to bring someone in for the rest of this year? After Saturday, we will have 7 games left. Figure 2-3 weeks for contract and immigration issues to be worked out and this guy is going to be here for 4 or 5 games max. Frankly, its time to start looking at next year. With a healthy Moreno, Q1 and Q2, I think we're pretty much set at Forward. Its time to find someone to replace Etch and ABMOD, and maybe Bennie since his contract expires after next year (and its more than likely he bolts to Europe). Yes, our finishing has been crappy this year, but so has our creativity in midfield, why aren't we trying to find something there?
Another player from England recently out of contract... . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . Dennis Wise
... and Delgado is coming off a knee injury. http://www.soccernet.com/england/news/2002/0803/20020803sfcdelgado.html
That would be cool. If we picked up Asprilla, we would have the "Tino, Tino and Chino" show on board.
Okay, this would be too good to be true but... Central American Has a National Team teammate on DCU roster (Milton Reyes) MLS has been doing business with his club lately (acquiring Freddy Garcia) It's been almost one year since I suggested DCU sign him while he was out-of-contract (just like Carlos Ruiz being signed 1 year after i suggested him) Could it? Would it? Should it be? Tyson Nunez?
Wow if it is Nunez that would be a great pickup, he tore our defense to shreds in the Communicaciones games earlier in the year. He's another short player, but seemed to make up for it in speed, he also seemed to be a pest in the USA vs Honduras match at RFK.
