    Correct, Metrochile.

    Correct on all fronts.

The only thing is that playing national team caps for Germany will very definitely increase his value to the international market for contract. If he's good enough and already playing club ball in Germany then the way to go from a small 2nd BL team to a larger Bundesliga side would be to play successfully for the German U20s and in front of scouts worldwide in the U20 world cup. If he forgoes that and only plays club ball with the youth program for a 2nd BL side then he won't be seen by a fraction of those people despite being good because the youth clubs aren't playing in high exposure spots. The U20 team does. So if he wants to prove that he's good enough for a 1BL side then he needs to prove it at a level that people think is elite (National Team competition) and where people are actually watching (National Team competition). Given that he can change his federation prior to his 21st birthday if he competes in the U20s, and that the payoff is HUGE for doing so, then it makes no sense for him to refuse a call up.

That is why I'm calling nonsense on that "factoid".

Your taking a very pragmatic view on this subject USAFutbol, however I don't know if this Guatemalan kid in Germany is taking this that practically. He might not want to be in the German national set-up, fighting for a spot constantly. If he's on the Guatemalan national team, and playing in the Bundesliga, he's practically guaranteed a starting spot. Who knows how he's approaching this, and again, who knows if this kid is any good!! No one has seen him play.

Which was exactly my point originally - many kids go through Euro programs and very few become anything no matter how well they do at the early stages. The difference between youth and men's competition is night and day. For every Arjen Robben there's a hundred Jovan Kirovskis.

if he is proud of his home country, be it guatemala or anywhere else, those feelings can easily outweigh something like exposure with germany or money.

the typical kid growing up away from home hears stories from his dad, eats his mom's traditional meals, talks with relatives on the phone or even makes a few visits to the homeland. realize there's nothing more powerful than these.

A couple of Jovan Kirovski's would be good for Guatemala right now. He probably has more tactical knowledge in his finger than most of our supposed "stars" have in their entire brain.

No doubt. Complete agreement on that. And that is why I'm saying we almost want to hope for that because I don't see any chance of him playing for Guate if he gets a real call to a German cap. We are sorely missing players with sound tactical training.

According to LARED yesterday, Carlos Ruiz was dealt off to LA Galaxy in a deal b/t Dalls, LA and DC. But according to the Dallas Morning News, the deal fell through last minute. Sounds like Ruiz is staying in Dallas for the meantime, but according to the MLS site Ruiz had a talk with the coach about him going to another team in the MLS or overseas.

Anyone else have some info on this matter? Opinions?

I can't see a overseas team taking a flyer on him, he's already in his late 20s. He can play anywhere in MLS and get a starting job so that's not a big deal either.

La Red Deportiva and at times Rojomania let their fanatic posture get in the way of responsible journalism. They are members of Pirulo and his porra that causes alot of division in Guatemala.

If you want to listen to a responsible show I suggest Gerardo Villa Jr and Martin Machon's show.

Dissapointing not to find any news about Jalapa being champions on this forum. Xela and Jalapa champions 2 tournaments in a row. I dont know if its parity or what but its good for our soccer.

Looks like Pablo Melgar has a shot to go out to Europe or the US for some club soccer. One thing I've noticed with Guatemalan players since the Bolillo era began is that there are alot more players who have had chances to play outside of Guate. Not only to the US, but to Europe.

I'm affraid of Dwight falling flat on his face in Italy, but at least it's a shot to better his all around skills which is what we need from our boys heading into WCQ's.

Where would Melgar be going in the USA? I don't know of any clubs that would look at him. He's not particularly well known, is slower than Bobby Boswell (which is saying something) and would have to be bought from Municipal for a transfer fee. I don't see it happening.

You seem to be more knowledgeable of Guatemalan and American football. What is your idea that there isn't more Guatemalans playing abroad? I don't think it is as simple as they aren't good enough, because I do feel there are some players that are good enough to play in other more quality 2nd and 3rd tier leagues.
My opinion is that the Guatemalan league pays a good enough salary that these players have a comfortable life in their home nation and don't want to leave for abroad, almost a microcosm of what has happened in Mexico for years, until recently.
    You agree?

Melgar to MLS? Sorry but I just don't think so, I have always thought he was overrated especially on these boards. I mean if Tavo couldnt make it on RSL than why does anyone think he can play for any other team. I always preferred Nestor Morales (I think that was his name) over him. Bolillo should look to the college ranks for players, I bet there are tons of american born chapines that would dawn the Bi-Color with pride (I know I would).

Despite what we want to believe, the Guatemalan league is a very poor training ground for professional footballers. The game moves slowly and has no tactical preparation. The leap from that level to a higher pro level is so large that scouting players from the league is difficult because coaches don't know whether the player will be succesful in a more high pressured, faster paced game with tactical demands. It's like looking at a player on a high school field in the US and taking a gamble on whether he'd be a good prospect for MLS.

Secondly, playing for the Guatemalan Sele doesn't demand respect outside of Central America. To be honest, few guys on the Sele are capable of being impact players in USL1 even, let alone higher levels (Loco was widely liked as a personality in Miami but considered an ineffective presence on the pitch). Melgar got run out of a poor Chilean league, Pezza has never caught on outside of one good year in Chile, Loco was a bust, Pando was a bust... and these are our best players! So MLS seems to have overlooked our guys for the time being.

Thirdly, no Euro passport severely limits the places they can go. And the places where having an EU passport is less important will require them to speak English. Few of our guys speak English.

Other things to keep in mind:
    - Our guys often sign long contracts with Guate clubs as kids. Clubs overseas will often only look at a guy from the Guate league if he's on a free transfer, but few of the better guys we have are ever on a free transfer because they are pushed to sign 4-5 year deals. Avila is an example of that. By the time he's free he'll be 23 and have missed his prime stage of development as viewed by the rest of the world. This makes them less desirable as a project, especially if they cost money.
    - Guate players don't have good agents - it's tough to find them anywhere, let alone scouting the Guate leagues. A few notable exceptions would be Pezza's guy seems to be a stud and has gotten him all over the place despite having a sub-average product to sell, and Tavo's guy seems like he opened a few doors for him at different times. Ruiz didn't have one till he got to the US and has done nothing for him since. The one guy that pushed Pando, Freddy Thompson and Loco seems to be a one trick pony and has a bad reputation for being less than truthful. The other guys don't even seem to have representatives that work outside of their region. Exporting these guys requires a lot of hard work to get them a look.
    - Your thoughts about wages are somewhat correct but not entirely. They are correct in that many of our guys are expected to enter foreign countries at lower levels of competition and prove themselves before playing in a first league. To find a European country, for example, that has a level that they can play without an EU passport generally puts them in smaller countries where clubs outside of the first division don't have much money to spend and that also inhibits their ability to go somewhere and work their way through the system.

So where does that put us this year? I don't see Melgar even trialing. I think Freddy can get back with Chivas for preaseason if his stint there in 2007 didn't poison the well (don't forget, he went there with his knee still injured and the club was upset by this - his agent told everyone that he just had to sign the contract which was not true). Further, Freddy would have to be sold by Municipal, so he'd have to have an arrangement with Municipal to leave for free. Otherwise, he's not leaving. The Comunicaciones guys are all on hold out, so some of them may be able to leave for free. There aren't many of note there - I can see a few like Cotto and Sonabria maybe getting a look in the USL and Cabrera could potentially be on the move again (though MLS would be tough given his first stint there). Avila is going nowhere because he'll be too expensive. Loco is not going back to MLS, nor is Pando. At the end of the day, I don't see more than one or two guys leaving this season and I suspect it'll be someone from Las Cremas because of the contract situation there.

    Sorry about the long answer!

Long answer, but a good one. It's a tad harsh, but I can't say I disagree with everything I've seen and heard. This leads to the next 3 questions:
    1) what is Honduras doing right in terms of exporting their players
    2) what is Costa Rica doing right in terms of having a decent league (for CONCACAF)
    3) what has Panama done from being a minnow to a legitimate threat to 3rd spot in CONCACAF.
