Guatemala international keeper Danny Ortiz has died after colliding with an opponent during a league match. The 27-year-old Municipal star ran into Comunicaciones forward Mario Rodriguez and suffered a blow to the chest, which briefly left him unconscious. Ortiz, who made his debut in the Guatemalan First Division in 1998 and who once played for Comunicaciones, died later in hospital. "Unfortunately, his heart did not respond," said a hospital spokesperson. More Info, mostly in Spanish: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=98958
A blow to the chest in the wrong place and at the wrong time can cause cardiac arrest. I've heard of hockey players dying of this every now and again -- very rarely, but it does happen.
Didn't some other Cental American keeper die in a collision within the last year or so, around the same time as the Cameroon player?
A few hockey goalies have died when a hard shot hits them right at their heart. There have been some efforts to improve the padding to prevent it from happening, I can't say if it's just a gimmick or actually effective. There was also a lacrosse player from Cornell who died this past spring after a hard shot hit him right in the chest during a game. I didn't see replays of this Guatemala incident, I can only guess he got a boot straight to the chest. I can't imagine something else hard enough to cause this.
When I saw the video I thought he died from getting hit on the head. The guy that hit didn't jump to good and he just hit the s..t out of him.
