There was a kicker-article on the Regensburg - Alemannia Aachen cup game on monday. Gibson's Regensburg lost 1:3 in over time. Gibson was sent off with a (according to kicker undeserved) red card in this game. The interesting part is that kicker quotes Gibson with: "The referee told me during the game that I would get a red card today and that he wouldn't give me penalty". Referee Markus Schmidt has denied those accusations. http://www.kicker.de/content/news/a...liga=1&saison=2005/06&spieltag=2&gruppe=17988
It's like Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown. Disturbing, whether or not his accusations are true. Because if they're not, that makes him seem pretty wierd.
BS-YA has trouble not being able to respect opinions when he came on the board. The thread he started basically became a troll/flame war. With him saying MLS wasn't good quality and the MLSphiles declaring an intifada on him. It was pretty embarrassing.
well, clearly when you have the opportunity to play in Germany in the 3rd or 4th Division, MLS does not look so good.
Most of the Regionalliga and Oberliga teams are just semi professional so I would say the level of play is much higher in the MLS although I have never watched an MLS match.
Bruce was sarcastic, but anyway: I don't think that there is a single Regionalliga team which is only or mostly semi-professional.
Mr. Gibson came to BS with a major attitude problem. Instead of serious discussion about soccer in Germany, which would have interested quite a few of us, he seemed more interested in dissing MLS. It's not surprising that it irritated a number of people. If he's happier with the bottom feeders in Germany, then I wish him well.
kind of. His statements were pretty strong, but there was a grain of truth in some of what he said. The other parts could have been easily ignored(imagine that on BS.) Also, at the time, he was the only player ever to publicly write something on the boards. This was a big deal for a lot of us because the 3rd div was still somewhat of an enimga to us. Unfotunately, some people couldn't restrain themselves about some of his hyberbolic comments. Some of his other comments were pretty dead on and insightful. At the end of the day, we ended up losing any sort of inside information because we couldn't have better degree of restraint. ____ Back to topic, I saw the play and Grover didn't deserve a red for it.
Well said. I actually thought the bigger douchebags were the posters who were so quick to rip the guy a new asshole.
He probably shouldn't have shoveled so much bullsh**. Also, Jamie Watson posted, I know for sure, in the past. I don't know if he still does now that he's a pro.
Well, even if he was shovelling bullshit, it just seemed to me that Grover was being flamed with a rabid ferocity that far surpassed the way other posters who shovel far more bullshit than Grover are treated. Ryan Coiner also posts here every now and then (under the name coingoal, IIRC). And at least when it comes to his posts here on BS, he seems to be a far classier guy than Grover.
I don't think Grover lacks class. I think Grover lacks an understanding of the improvements in MLS since he last lived in the states, and overemphasized the negatives of the league. Since he chose not to try to play in MLS, it tended to come off as self-aggrandizing.
That old Gibson thread was great! Thanks for the link. I think he made many good points although he could have been a little less haughty. His perspective, however, was very useful to see.
