They could’ve played this in any other stadium and the gameplay/flow would’ve been the same. It’s just the way Spain and Uruguay are (recycling possession for the former and the latter trying to grit out result using a physical approach)
But the misses of opportunities and the ways the ball bounced and elevated was a bit weird. Teams looked really gassed at the end too. I think it played a factor.
Yeah, no altitude excuse. Its not like it was an amazing game for the first 30 minutes and then the players wilted in the modest altitude. It stunk from minute 1.
Cape Verde needed one try to qualify for the World Cup kos while Tunisia couldn’t do it after 7.— Lesley🇳🇬 (@Lez_fcb) June 27, 2026 @vancity eagle
I don't like these comparisons cuz its R16 v R32. Comparing apples to oranges. Let's see if Cabo Verde can qualify to the R16 like Tunisia couldn't.
Not even gonna comment on Uruguay cos but is THIS the allmighty unbeatable best team of the WC Spain?? Mmk
True but that group that Cape Verde qualified from as one of the top 2 is a 32 WC team caliber group. There have been weaker groups at 32 team world cups. So yeah I still think its fair to say Cape Verde did what Tunisia could not.
Uruguay actually troubled them. TBH I think k the altitude played a part in making Spain look average. Uruguay also played a good block and were fighting very hard.
I've seen a number of teams at altitude and they've looked poor for their standards. Colombia though looked good against DRC.
Cape Verde also played a good block and made Spain look average (well actually they did it themselves with harmless possession) in Atlanta. This is not an altitude taming Spain problem. As noted, it wasn’t even high enough in yesterday’s match to begin with.

They barely conceded a scoring chance during the entire group stage. Just 2 weak shots on target and 0.54xG for their 3 opponents combined. That's pretty steady and focussed playing. By comparison, France allowed 1.7xG against a Norway reserve side alone.
1500m is negligible. Only above 2000 you can notice any real effect in a professional athlete's performance.
True, but what quality were their opponents? They had one of the easiest groups in the whole World Cup.
Well that was ugly. Little creativity, many brainfades, zero discipline. We're back to the 1990s! Journalists are licking their chops, which they hone evey day. I told you so...
Uruguay will find your weakness and expose it for all to see. That’s what they do best. Spain, you know, that “amazing team”, had two scoring chances against a mediocre team with no goalkeeper. Rochet didn’t touch the ball in the second half(neither did “wonder kid” Lamin by the way). You’re relieved that they won’t expose your team’s weakness. I understand.
Well, 103' 2-2 Cape Verde! GOAL by Sidny Cabral! Rotterdammer Sidny Cabral, who played at Spartaan'20 just a few hundreds meter from my house. Unbelievable! It's in again! And what a goal! Cabral shoots perfectly into the top corner from outside the penalty area, from a difficult angle. Far beyond the reach of Emiliano Martinez. Cabral runs away with his hands on his head. He doesn't believe it, no one believes it, Messi sighs with impression. One of the most beautiful of this World Cup, perhaps the most beautiful. He just scored a screamer that fits with full honours in the legacy of Dutch stunners in world cups.
Please don't steal CPV spotlight. It is their time now, not NED. Kudos to CPV. Before their group phase started, I was one of several in this thread who dismissed them as WC group cannon fodder. Hopefully, CPV younger players will get actual playing time at their new clubs next season.
Wouldn't be surprised if this WC allows them to attract even more diaspora players. They could see how good this team can be.
