Third place of group E would be the most likely opponent of Mexico (high % of combinations give that match up). I can perfectly see Ecuador beating Mexico even if it's on pens.
They are kinda the same sort of team. Good defensive teams that struggle to score; Ecuador has the better defense, Mexico the better attack... I don't see either team going that far unless they get cupcake teams.
Yup. They played the Orange Squad in a friendly and they were very good, especially defensively. However they have severe lack of gunpowder. I was amazed how good they could create chances, but simply have no clue how to put them into the back of the goal.
Unfortunate news to start the week. 😔Nico Schlotterbeck suffered a medial ligament injury in his left ankle during the German national team’s match against Ivory Coast. He will be out for several months for both the DFB and Borussia Dortmund. We’re with you, Schlotti! 💛 pic.twitter.com/qgNvSXmK6N— Borussia Dortmund (@BlackYellow) June 22, 2026
I wonder if that will influence Germany to be extra cautious with the lineup vs Ecuador. I know I would be. Game means nothing for Germany. Could be a lifeline for Ecuador, though.
⚔️🇩🇪🇪🇨 AHORA: ¡FORMACIONES CONFIRMADAS PARA ALEMANIA Y ECUADOR!Ya clasificada y puntera, Alemania no guarda nada y va con titulares. Mismo equipo para los dirigidos por Advocaat. Germany with a full lineup. Not going easy. It is in fact CIV resting players in their match which has more at stake.
Great first quarter by Ecuador!! Not so great for the ref, who screwed them on at least 3 occasions, all huge calls.
I agree that the German goal should not have counted but there was really no other controversial scene..
VAR shouldn't even be used for subjective calls if it can't even overturn something that clear and obvious. Just limit it to offsides and other black & white situations. This was even worse than Ghana v England. I guess i should be happy because i can't recall VAR stepping in for even one subjective call all tournament, but I have a feeling it will soon at the most inappropriate time (ie when the call on the field didn't favor the bigger team / favorite).
Ecuador won 2-1 amid tremendous emotion and elation in NY/NJ! One can only feel like sharing in their euphoria particularly as the result is largely irrelevant for Germany.
Gotta give Ecuador some credit here. They found a way when they were seemingly left for dead. They can be very dangerous if they play like this in the next round.
If I'm not wrong for their second trip to the knockout stage they will probably play England like they did for their first WC KO tie in 2006!
