This thread is for preliminary roster announcements followed by speculation on the cuts ahead of the final roster submission. Thirty-man rosters are due May 11th, one of the moderators will open the thread shortly before then and post the rosters if nobody beats them to it. If one of the 4 teams submits a preliminary roster early someone will open the thread early. Feel free to PM a mod to alert them if this happens.

After that, we're sure there will be plenty to talk about until the final rosters are submitted on June 1st.

Thread is closed until the first roster is out. Stay tuned.

MY COMMENT: It seems that Lagerback has the same problem that Amodu had - no proper midfielders... hence he has drafted 12 strikers (including 4 wingers) and just 5 midfielders (Kalu Uche is a winger) including 4 DMs. The only proper midfielder in the squad of 30 is Lukman Haruna, who may be talented, but I can't see him pushing the Nigerian team all by himself. This will likely mean that the attacks will be coming from the wings where players like Taiwo, Obasi, Odemwingie or the Uche brothers prefer to operate. Hopefully the DMs will learn to fill in for Taiwo when he pushes up front...

I am very satisfied with the defence - all the best players are there. Slightly sad that Ahmed Musa has been cut, but if you have 12 good strikers already it's not really a position you need more of. Nice to see Peter Utaka, who has been Nigeria's most prolific goalscorer this season with 16 goals this season (and an impressive 76 goals in 110 games for his clubs), as well as Ideye Brown, who had a good season first in Switzerland and then in Ligue 1. But like I said... it's not the striker position that is the problem...

In the end this squad looks in dire need of a proper 10. Rabiu Ibrahim may have been a longshot, but he should have at least been given a chance.

The Nigerian team is fine, all the junk players Amodu paraded around like Olofinjana and Nwaneri were dropped. I am happy with the list, just hope the final 23 will be on point. Not many teams in the world have a traditional #10 anymore. No teams in this group have a traditional #10 so this is not a problem Maruti. Nigeria has always depended on pacy wingers for their attacks, this time around will be no different. I am fairly confident these guys can make the second round.

Ok. They may not have a proper 10. But they have proper midfielders :)

Maradona is a retard, how can he leave out Cambiasso and Zanetti and chose wastepipes like Coloccini. I have to say that I am very happy to play Arg without cambiasso in the midfield. I believe their defence is quite suspect as well.

Yeah! Lavezzi and Palermo :) Meanwhile no Lopez... No Cambiasso or Zanetti, but the terrible Demichelis makes the team... Not too mention no Banega.

Yep. Maradona is a retard. It is quite unbelievable that he has such great players but makes such a terrible choice instead. The defence looks so leaky and poor that it is unbelievale.

    Someone wrote this interesting post:

I feel it's incomprehensible how Maradona not called to Javier Zanetti and Esteban Cambiasso. Other main absences to me are Gabriel Milito, Lucho González and Lisandro López (Argentina).

The terrible Demichelis annuled Lopez against Lyon and aside from when he slipped against ManUtd he was quite good in that series as well. He's been a rock for Argentina for years now so his inclusion is not controversial at all.

I agree about the rest though.

How is Demichelis terrible? He's won 10 titles in his career and has been awseom this season. He and Samuel could be the best centerback pairing in the world cup

Is it true that Maradona is bias towards ex- Boca Junior players.
its pretty sad that he didn't let Zanetti or Cambiasso on their roster. This is probably there last chance to play in the WC considering their ages

There are a lot of rumors. The former coach's son accused Maradona of conspiring and talking to different players to get Basile fired. So there's that drama and when you notice the 3 key players Maradona ignored or has alienated: Riquelme, Zanetti, Cambiasso were all staples under Basile. Zanetti was his captain and Riquelme, Cambiasso were regular starters.

So a lot of people thing there's something fishy there.

Demichelis has been awesome this season? What games were you watching. Demichelis was the worst thing about Bayern and was a liability.

What about the rumor that the out of favor, under Basile, Heinze was re-instated back in the first team because Heinze's brother is Diego's agent and the said agent lent Diego $1 million?

    Final 23 for Nigeria:
Goalkeepers: Vincent Enyeama (Hapoel Tel Aviv/ISR), Dele Aiyenugba (Bnei Yehuda/ISR), Austin Ejide (Hapoel Petah Tikva/ISR)

Defenders: Taye Taiwo (Olympique Marseille/FRA), Elderson Echiejile (Rennes/FRA), Chidi Odiah (CSKA Moscow/RUS), Joseph Yobo (Everton/ENG), Daniel Shittu (Bolton Wanderers/ENG), Ayodele Adeleye (Sparta Rotterdam/NED), Rabiu Afolabi (SV Salzburg/AUS)

Midfielders: Kalu Uche (Almeria/SPA), Dickson Etuhu (Fulham/ENG), Mikel Obi (Chelsea/ENG), Sani Kaita (Alaniya/RUS), Haruna Lukman (AS Monaco/FRA), Yusuf Ayila (Dynamo Kiev/UKR)

Strikers: Yakubu Aiyegbeni (Everton/ENG), Chinedu Obasi (TSG Hoffenheim/GER), Nwankwo Kanu, John Utaka (Portsmouth/ENG), Obafemi Martins (Wolfsburg/GER), Obinna Nsofor (Malaga/SPA), Osaze Odemwingie (Lokomotiv Moscow, Russia)

    DROPPED PLAYERS:
    GK: Bassey Akpan
    DF: Terna Suswan, Onyekachi Apam
ST: Brown Ideye, Peter Utaka, Victor Anichebe, Ike Uche

Can't say I'm happy with the cut. Peter Utaka, Terry Suswan and especially Victor Anichebe should have made the cut. Kanu SHOULD NOT BE ON THE LIST. Peter Utaka should have featured ahead of John Utaka. I believe Onyekachi Apam was dropped due to injury.

Basically the only change from the pre-Eriksson era is the inclusion of Lukman Haruna and maybe a slight revolution in defence with an much improved Adeleye-Afolabi center defence being a marked improvement.

John Utaka really sucks, how he made the team ahead of Anichebe or Uche is just mind boggling. Word is Anichebe picked up a knock, and Uche has been out for 6 months prior, but i would honestly take a half fit Uche and Anichebe over Utaka. I am really pissed.
