i long for the day when we understand how 32 year old players are discoveries and how allocations are earned and lost (besides the "you suck" allocation)
hang in there jmiesson, we feel your angst. so i guess this means colorado can pursue an additional signing via its valderrama allocation. if they get a big horse up front they could be tough. of course that's a big "if".
Discoveries used to have a salary limit on them, not sure if they do anymore. It may be that if you don't need a transfer fee, and you can eat the salary under the cap, you don't need to use an allocation. In any case, Colorado has apparently still got one.
Basically: Discovery: free agent Allocation: transfer fee involved You generally get allocations for players who required allocations to acquire. But that is fluid as we all know.
oh, the whole thing is definitely fluid... which is why i want to know the rules on the subject i just went through mlsnet to try and find anything on allocations and discoveries... no mentioning of them, although i'll keep looking for a bit
Past discovery players: Carlos Ruiz John Spencer Alexi Lalas (to Galaxy) Robert Warzycha Daniel Torres Simon Elliott Jason Bent Wolde Harris Rick Titus Manny Lagos David Vaudreuil Troy Dayak Ronnie Ekelund Jimmy Conrad Steve Morrow Jim Rooney Mike Slivinski Cesar Alvarado Mickey Trotman Gary Glasgow Mark Watson Ansil Elcock Pete Marino Stern John Ian Bishop Neathan Gibson There are probably more.
i'm highly skeptical that you have the whole player aquisition process down pat... and if you do, mind explaining it to everyone?
I believe that between Monster's analysis and MLS's rundown, you can figure it out. But then again suspicion breads confidence
wasn't onandi lowe a transfer from the rhinos? he's listed as a discovery... and i'm merely looking for clarification as for my sig, i'm guessing you have never seen the terry gilliam film "brazil"... (he's also done "twelve monkeys")... "suspicion breeds confidence" was a sign in the bank ground during one of the scenes i thought it apt for how things go during the offseason why don't you rent the movie?
actually, we (chayes found it) found out that monster is incorrect both methods provide money for transfers, but they are different in how they are used... any team can go after a player with the allocation, but with the discovery... the team throws everyone else out of the way, as in they can't cut in front with their earlier allocation each team gets $100k/year for discoveries (2 per year)... but you can use 3 years worth of that fee at once (i'm assuming if you have saved it, although maybe not)
This may sound like an odd question, but is there any chance that Grimandi is thekind to bring out Arsenal fans who may not have been inclined to see MLS previously?
trust me, i had no clue... i just wanted things cleared up as much as possible pretty much everything was found by goodwin and chayes though (jeremy passed the link on to me)
Maybe. Probably not as much as would have turned out to see Tony Adams in NY, though. Sounds like a good signing to me. Let's hope he follows through. If he works out for the Rapids like Steve Morrow did for Dallas - it will be all good.
No doubt. The guy was on the EPL-winning team 18 months ago so even a guy like Pablo, who has seen a good deal of success, can learn something. Even if a few more people give MLS a chance because this guy is a Gunner, that's a good step.
Robert Pires has mentioned he'd like to finish his career in MLS once his contract with Arsenal is up in 2005 (he'll be 32 then). I'm not sure how many folk will turn out for Grimandi, but Pires certainly has the name-recognition factor to potentially attract a few more fans to the MLS fold.
Perhaps Monster was incorrect, but the premise, which was outlined last February has always remained the same. Discovery players are identified by a team whereas Allocations are identified by the League itself. Is it a fine line? Sure. My problem is that every year people want to run around shouting consiparcy. Overall, shouldn't we be pleased that we are now getting many quality players from overseas on a free? The quality of the league, and thus they players within will continue to improve with little or no acquistion costs. Dan Counce likely initiated contact with Grimandi, whereas it is likely that Stewart initiated contact with the League, thus becoming an allocation. Again, it seems pretty simple to me, but the fact that we have a single entity on our hands promotes paranoia and anger amongst fans who think they are getting the shaft. Good signing by Colorado.
my thoughts exactly... usually it takes awhile before someone ever brings up the sig (back when we all could have them)
