Everson Maciel put home a penalty kick with five minutes left in regulation time and the Western Mass. Pioneers pulled out a 3-2 victory over the Harrisburg City Islanders last night in a rough and tumble match.

LUDLOW - Not a bad debut for the Western Mass. Lady Pioneers.

Teenager Katie Schoepfer scored twice and Kelly Shimmin had a goal and a pair of assists as the Lady Pioneers opened the United Soccer Leagues W-League schedule with a 3-0 win over Long Island last night at Lusitano Stadium.

After 5 games on the road , The Pioneers have their home game debut tonight.
This is the final U.S. Open Cup qualifier for the Pioneers and they need at least one point from the game to get into the tournament.

LUDLOW - The Western Mass. Pioneers struggled for six minutes and it ended up costing them their home opener.

The Charlotte Eagles, the defending United Soccer Leagues Second Division champions, scored two goals six minutes apart early in the first half and made them stand up, 2-1, last night at Lusitano Stadium.
The wet conditions didn't help much either.

It was a rematch of last year's championship game played here and won by the Eagles (2-1-2) in penalty kicks.

The Pioneers failed to qualify as an USL2 team for the US Open Cup.

The team did well last season when they were knocked off the competition by MLS side Chicago Fire.

"Senior" Pioneer still gets his kicks

Hard to believe he's the Old Man of the team, but with this his fourth year on the roster, Chicopee's Jeff Deren has the longest continuous tenure with the Western Mass. Pioneers.

There are a few Pioneers older than Deren's 24 years - he'll be 25 next month - but none have been with the semi-professional soccer team as long.

Midfielder Federico Molinari is the only other player who was on the Western Mass. roster along with Deren in 2003, but the native of Argentina only just returned to the squad after two years abroad.

    News about the Lady Pioneers:

Two teams tied for the lead in the Northeast Division, both undefeated and unscored upon, both leading the W-League in scoring.

Something has to give when the Western Mass. Lady Pioneers play the New York Magic tonight at Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y.

The Lady Pioneers and the Magic are both 2-0.

The season is not going well at all.

I do recall in the early 1990s, the Grémio Lusitano (of Ludlow) used to play in the Pioneer Valley Senior Summer League along with Unity AC, Chicopee AJAC, and to name a few. Does WMass Pioneers consider this particular association as a partner in youth development and local recruiting, even to this day?

Good question. The answer to all is yes.
The Grémio Lusitano is the Portuguese social club that owns the Pioneers. They also field two or three senior amateour teams, as they have done through the long history of the club. And lets not forget bocce teams :) .

On the women's side, the W-league last game of the regular season ended w/ a loss for the Lady Pioneers. They were already play-off bound, but w/ the loss they finished in second place in the table.

The 2-0 win over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at Lusitano Stadium kept the postseason hopes alive for the Pioneers (5-8-3, 21 points), who need to win out just to be in the running for the playoffs.

It cost him a yellow card, but Western Mass. Pioneers forward Kyle Teixeira gladly paid the price.

After nearly 90 minutes of near misses and hit crossbars, Teixeira finally found the back of the net last night. Teixeira celebrated by pulling off his shirt.

Pioneers away loss to Long Island by the score of 2-0 crushed the hopes for a final rally in the last three games to ensure a spot in the play-offs.
With this loss, the Pioneers have the last two games to play for pride and soul searching for what went wrong this season.
