It's official! https://www.chicagofirefc.com/news/...halter-as-director-of-football-and-head-coach Gregg Berhalter is the Chicago Fire's new Director of Football and Head Coach! The path to tomorrow starts today 👊 #cf97 pic.twitter.com/W8FAfrgVOM— Chicago Fire FC (@ChicagoFire) October 8, 2024 For better or worse, here we go! We've handed him the keys to the car, do we crash or do win the race? Let the fun begin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go Fire!
Over/under of him keeping both jobs is 2 years and I’ll take the under. Oh wait, seeing how long we gave Heitz / Klopas maybe I better go with the over.
Dammit! Some people have voted before I could finalize the Poll! Y'all too quick for me. Oh, well, we have two spots to VOTE FOR Malört. Hell, we'll probably need it. (and rubber dick, which I hope we don't need, but to each their own).
If this team only had a soul! "Heart and soul" are not the first things I think of when I think of Gregg Berhalter. (have to add Berhalter to my spell check) I desperately want to be wrong!
kinda crazy how loose the team is with job titles N-Rod was General Manager, then GM and President, then just President when Hetiz was signed Hetiz was Sporting Director and Pelzer Technical Director, with a rotating cast of Presidents GGG is now Director of Football and Frank is VP of football, unclear if Pelzer will stick around
a few tweets: Expect an entirely new roster for next season. Some pieces will stick around, but a good chunk will be moved out. Gregg’s plan doesn’t involve most of these guys.— TR (@TyrusRoseCF97) October 8, 2024 gonna take a little wizardry to create significant turnover on the roster given the contract status of many guys -- I hope it happens, but need some sucker teams to take on some of our hard-to-move contracts I would not be surprised if the Fire make Juve an offer they can’t refuse for Wes.— Matthew Doyle (@MattDoyle76) October 8, 2024 I like Wes and his role for the USMNT but he is not the type of guy I think you build around in MLS we need to find our Cucho who can make plays for others and score -- Wes is very good, but I don't think he fits that role and is better suited as a supporting player in big time leagues -- fwiw, Cucho has a Transfermarkt value is $15M and Wes' is $28M, but for MLS I think the Cucho-type player is much more valueable that said, GGG seems to play a very rigid system with an emphasis on player role and responsibility instead of individual creativity (a slight bummer as a fan, but if it leads to wins then no sweat)
Like many soccer head coaches, GGG has his fans and his critics. I happen to think he has a number of characteristics that will be helpful in his new position. How successful will he be? Only time will tell. Keep in mind that, despite his dual position, there will still be a number of factors he will not control. And of, there is always luck. Is he best in world- clearly no. Is he the best theFire could get at this time-possibly. Whatever his abilities, whatever your past opinion of him, today he deserves the full support of every Fire fan.
All of this, especially the last part. I am less negative about him as head coach than Klopas or Ezra or Paunovic (never could get a handle on Wicky). More positive about Berhalter as SD/GM/Whatever than Heitz or Rodriguez or Bliss or Klopas (when he had the role).
Pretty much my thoughts exactly. It's a loooow bar Gregg - use some of those limited edition Jordan's to clear it!
WIZARDRY! Maybe he can get GrandGarber to add some juju to the effort....going to need it! I half-disagree...we desperately need a CM like Wes...AND we need a DP forward.
I assume "Wes" is Weston McKinney. What does he bring to the table to any MLS team that would warrant a transfer fee approaching $30,000,000?!? I just don't see it. Interesting that his salary is "only" €2.5 million per season. https://sbisoccer.com/2024/08/weston-mckennie-signs-contract-extension-with-juventus#:~:text=McKennie signed a one-year,per season, according to reports.
Malik Tillman is cheaper and better and just might light a fire (no pun intended) under Guti. Sell them both for $50 million total after the Fire win MLS Cup 2026 and the US gets 3rd in WC2026.
i think it can be challenging to know how different skillsets will fare in MLS compared to a top flight league -- it's why a guy with supreme skills like Shaq can't succeed the one template that seems to work over and over is the attacking midfielder with speed, vision, and creativity like Cucho, Carles Gil, Riqui Puig, Carlos Vela, Hany Mukhtar, Luciano Acosta, Dániel Gazdag, Thiago Almada, and so on we desperately need a guy like that
Wait, according to Tyrus GGG has a plan. What is this "plan" of which he speaks. I have heard of such a thing, but have not actually seen one on my journeys to Fire matches.
I hope it is a three year championship plan that is reevaluated on a yearly basis..................................................actually I don't really care that much anymore seeing as this year is the first time since 1997 that I did not watch any Chicago Fire soccer games live or on tv.
If either of them played good D they'd be great squad players! But if GGG sticks with his 4-3-3 they could be played as forwards...
