Actually, Schiaffino was known because he wasn't a goalscorer mate, was more a creative player. Argentina Greatest Player Ever: Diego Maradona Greatest Goalscorer: Gabriel Batistuta Greatest Provider: Diego Maradona Greatest Defensive Player: Daniel Passarella Greatest Goalkeeper: Amadeo Carrizo Bolivia Greatest Player Ever: Marco Antonio Etcheverry Greatest Goalscorer: Joaquín Botero Greatest Provider: Erwin Sánchez Greatest Defensive Player: Marco Antonio Sandy Greatest Goalkeeper: Carlos Trucco Brasil Greatest Player Ever: Pelé Greatest Goalscorer: Pelé Greatest Provider: Pelé Greatest Defensive Player: Carlos Alberto Greatest Goalkeeper: Gilmar Chile Greatest Player Ever: Elías Figueroa Greatest Goalscorer: Iván Zamorano Greatest Provider: Leonel Sánchez Greatest Defensive Player: Elías Figueroa Greatest Goalkeeper: Sergio Livingstone Colombia Greatest Player Ever: Willington Ortiz Greatest Goalscorer: Arnoldo Iguarán Greatest Provider: Carlos Valderrama Greatest Defensive Player: Iván Córdoba Greatest Goalkeeper: Óscar Córdoba Ecuador Greatest Player Ever: Alberto Spencer Greatest Goalscorer: Alberto Spencer Greatest Provider: Álex Aguinaga Greatest Defensive Player: Iván Hurtado Greatest Goalkeeper: José Francisco Cevallos Paraguay Greatest Player Ever: Arsenio Erico Greatest Goalscorer: Arsenio Erico Greatest Provider: Julio César Romero Greatest Defensive Player: Carlos Gamarra Greatest Goalkeeper: José Luis Chilavert Peru Greatest Player Ever: Teófilo Cubillas Greatest Goalscorer: Teodoro Fernández Greatest Provider: César Cueto Greatest Defensive Player: Héctor Chumpitaz Greatest Goalkeeper: Juan Valdivieso Uruguay Greatest Player Ever: Juan Alberto Schiaffino Greatest Goalscorer: Héctor Scarone Greatest Provider: Juan Alberto Schiaffino Greatest Defensive Player: José Nasazzi Greatest Goalkeeper: Ladislao Mazurkiewicz
Dunga? he could be among the best defensive midfielder for Brazil) but if including defenders, I am afraid he would be behind at least 5 names: D.Santos, N.santos, De Guia, C.Alberto, and arguably Cafu ... Peru FC has made very good list
I noticed you chose Trapattoni as the greatest ever Italian coach, what about Marcello Lippi, Fabio Capello or Vittorio Pozzo?
I chose him because of his records. Didn't he have the best Serie A record? This was just a rough draft. i am opened for update.
CONCACAF Costa Rica 1) Greatest player ever Alejandro Morera Soto 2) Greatest goalscorer Paolo Cesar Wanchope 3) Greatest provider Jafet Soto 4) Greatest Defensive player Mauricio Montero 5) Greatest goalkeeper Gabriel Conejo 6) Greatest coach Hernan Medford Mexico 1) Greatest player ever Hugo Sanchez 2) Greatest goalscorer Jared Borgetti 3) Greatest provider Alberto García Aspe 4) Greatest Defensive player Rafael Marquez 5) Greatest goalkeeper Jorge Campos 6) Greatest coach Javier Aguirre USA 1) Greatest player ever Landon Donovan 2) Greatest goalscorer Brian McBride 3) Greatest provider Claudio Reyna 4) Greatest Defensive player Marcelo Balboa 5) Greatest goalkeeper Kasey Keller 6) Greatest coach Bruce Arena
Are you referring to Luis Gabelo Conejo or is he a different goalkeeper ? I'd replace him by Antonio Carbajal. I'd replace them by Billy Gonsalves, Walter Bahr and Brad Friedel respectively.
The Netherlands 1) Greatest player ever Johan Cruyff 2) Greatest goalscocrer Marco Van Basten 3) Greatest provider(someone who provides the assists; playmaker, winger, etc) Dennis Bergkamp 4) Greatest Defensive player(DMF or defender) Frank Rijkaard 5) Greatest goalkeeper Frans de Munck 6) Greatest coach Rinus Michels
Greatest player : Paul Van Himst Greatest goalscorer : Jef Mermans Greatest provider : Frank Vercauterten Greatest DF player : Eric Gerets Greatest GKeeper : J-M Pfaff Greatest coach : Guy Thijs
Yes, sorry about that. He conceded more goals than any other keeper in history, some which any decent keeper would have saved. min 0:10 [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Qbr9h9XTlo"]France vs Mexico 1954 (19-06-1954)[/ame] He didn´t even come off his line as the attacker approached him. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR7-vN1f7gY"]jorge campos video[/ame] Campos on the other hand was spectacular despite being very short. He was solid for Mexico throughout the 1990s, both in the 2 World Cups, their Gold Cup wins and only Confederations Cup win. Gonsalves and Bahr didn´t have the major careers in Europe Friedel and Keller had.
Actually, I think Carbajal is usually overrated because his five participations in World Cups, but in spite of that, he was a solid goalkeeper during his 16 years in León. The biggest part of his high negative record was because Mexico was awful defending in his time. Campos was a good goalkeeper, very good leaping ability and speed, but only spectacular because his acrobatic style and his colorful attire. Actually, I'd ranked slightly better to Óscar Pérez. First, I don't think is necessary that a player impact in Europe to have a better individual category in every case. Then, Donovan and Balboa (the players you're mentioning) didn't have their major careers in Europe neither. Donovan played almost all his career in United States (in San José Earthquakes and Los Ángeles Galaxy) and never had a real impact in Europe (barely played 7 games to Bayer Leverkusen, 6 to Bayern Münich and slightly more than 10 games to Everton scoring only 2 goals at overall). Balboa never played in Europe.
Not many American players besides Keller, Friedel, and McBride have had good careers in Europe, which is one of the reasons for their high rankings. I ranked Donovan and Balboa for their overall play with the USMNT. Babloa was solid in 1994, and helped anchor one of the toughest defenses of that Cup. Donovan helped the US reach one of their best finishes in the WC. Most importantly, he´s the all-time leader in goals and assists for the national team.
You'd replace Marcelo Balboa with Walter Bahr as the United States' greatest defensive player? I think Bahr was certainly a greater player than Balboa, but he was an attacking midfielder.
Walter Bahr never was an attacking midfielder mate, he was a sweeper or defensive midfielder, ever regarded as a defensive stalwart.
Austria As the wording is greatest, not best: 1) Greatest player ever Matthias Sindelar 2) Greatest goalscocrer Krankl seriously - not Binder or Bican 3) Greatest provider uhmm 4) Greatest Defensive player Herbert Prohaska 5) Greatest goalkeeper Rudi Hiden 6) Greatest coach Ernst Happel
But it was his position definitely. That's true, he was more a deep-lying playmaker, good defending but better passing. I'd vote for Ernst Ocwirk or Ernst Happel to the position of defensive player for Austria.
