I've recently completed this positional ranking for every decade since 1930 which I thought I'd share here. If you would prefer to see it with a better lay-out you can click HERE. PLA, GLD & SIL means Platinum, Gold and Silver, with 5 tiers in each, 'I' highest, 'V' lowest. I explain the rating system and how players are evaluated HERE. The rankings aren't based on a player's performance across a whole decade, as it's unfair on players who peaked at the end of one and the start of another. Instead, it's simply the best players seen in a given decade. A player can only be included in a single decade's list, so I've tried to assess when their peak was. Second strikers are merged into other lists due to it being a more specialised role in most decades - they are given an *asterisk. They are usually placed in the attacking-midfield or striker list, with the exception of Angel Romano, Hristo Stoichkov and Lionel Messi, who are listed as wingers/wide-forwards. The margins are usually quite close in the lists so are always open to change in future, all opinions welcome of course. Pre-30's Positional Ranking GOALKEEPERS 1. H.Stuhlfauth (GER) GLD V 2. Nice work mate, I thought it well merited a rep for every post, with the work/research needed. It definitely looks an informed set of lists to me! In terms of positional questions I guess those I might have would mostly revolve around the second striker categorisation indeed (other than possibly whether the likes of Crompton as old-timer full-backs could fit best as centre backs...but probably they were more like general last line of defence players anyway I guess); I tend to think Haynes might not really need an asterisk (I'm not necessarily saying I know about him than you though, but from what I do know I'd be less likely to suggest an asterisk for him than for Sandro Mazzola I think for example actually), while Faas Wilkes should have one I'd think (with even a possibility to put him as attacking midfielder maybe - either that or indeed striker/CF considering the players you generally have in those categories as he won't have played a lot as a wing player I don't think, even if in a modern team wing forward could be a position he'd play theoretically perhaps). I wouldn't argue with your classes (I think Pele and Messi together in the top tier would possibly be a popular idea now too), even if I guess I'd be getting through them a bit quicker if I tried a similar attempt (maybe getting to Silver 2 after 100 players or so) - it could be like this, going chronologically in each grouping, but would be a guesstimate obviously anyway and with (perceived) peak level the most significant criteria even if not the only one: Platinum I - Pele Platinum II - Cruyff, Maradona Platinum III - Di Stefano, Beckenbauer, Platini, Messi Platinum IV - Puskas, Eusebio, Best, Van Basten, Zidane Platinum V - Bobby Charlton, Zico, M.Laudrup, Ronaldo, C.Ronaldo Gold I - Garrincha, Moore, Rivera, G.Muller, Dalglish, Baresi, R.Baggio, Figo, Ronaldinho Gold II - Meazza, Matthews, Finney, Yashin, Rummenigge, Gullit, Matthaus, Bergkamp, Henry Gold III - Schiaffino, Kopa, Neeskens, Hagi, Klinsmann, Rijkaard, Savicevic, Weah, Romario, P.Maldini, Cafu, Shevchenko Gold IV - Fontaine, Edwards, Jairzinho, Dzajic, Rivelino, Kempes, Cantona, P.Schmeichel, Vieira, Raul, Totti, Kaka Gold V - Hidegkuti, Didi, Greaves, Banks, Carlos Alberto, Krol, Scirea, Socrates, Lineker, Redondo, Nedved, Pires Silver I - Sindelar, Sarosi, Liedholm, Kubala, Charles, F.Albert, Hoddle, Sammer, B.Laudrup, Batistuta, Giggs, Rivaldo, Beckham Silver II - Piola, Pedernera, Bozsik, S.Kocsis, Law, Gerson, S.Mazzola, Tostao, Deyna, Rensenbrink, PR Falcao, P.Rossi, Ceulemans, Tigana, Scifo, Stojkovic, Rui Costa, G.Buffon, Xavi, Iniesta I think others could probably make it in Silver II though also, if I was erring to the positive estimation about their prime form (in their eras, but in theory in others too): Bobby Walker, Arthur Friedenreich, Jose Manuel Moreno, Zizinho, Fritz Walter, Valentino Mazzola, Teofilo Cubillas, Neymar....
Thanks @PDG1978 , yeah I can see how the older defenders' positions can be up for interpretation. Nice attempt with the tiers even if I wouldn't agree with Pires ahead of Xavi/Iniesta. I think the narrower tiers is a good way of looking at it
Thanks for the nice comment mate. Yeah, I suppose the trouble is you'd quickly be getting down to Bronze tier possibly (or Frankincense or whatever it would be called!), plus the fact people will be increasingly disagreeing perhaps shows that wider tiers can be suitable (but for sure Silver III in any attempt I made would already be getting on the substantial side for sure anyway if I carried on the attempt). I guess potentially rather than Bobby Walker, Friedenreich, perhaps Walter and Valentino Mazzola (if erring a little away from maximum-ish assessment - any true assessment is kind of impossible including for young Walter I suppose when it comes to those players, because it lacks the true visual appreciation extensive footage can bring), I could slot some defenders like Nesta, Figueroa, possibly Nilton Santos and Jorginho who I tended to feel was a high class full back/wing back, into that Silver II group of mine too in theory.... I suppose it's hard in a way to compare integral parts of some of the most successful teams with other players (and for sure in some aspects prime Xavi and Iniesta were genuinely better in playing terms...although vice versa too I think), but maybe this very well made video can show something of why I would think so highly of Pires (not that it was factored in to my thought process - he's been long included somewhere in the top 100 of any list I attempted to be honest....rightly or wrongly....and I still tend to be a bit more lenient than some/most when making any attempt - to be fair as you've said greatest specifically maybe on this thread it's more appropriate to give more significance to that also) Obviously videos like that are to an extent to be seen with a pinch of salt, as perhaps are Sofascore ratings though it's interesting to note his 2003/04 Champions League average, the earliest one available on there, is in the ballpark with the highest ones of Xavi and Iniesta though a little below Xavi's of 2009/10 - maybe Iniesta is a slightly more like for like comparison with a little bit lower passing volume and little bit more advanced role in any case....) Likewise the DBS Calcio ratings, as nicely attempted as they are in terms of making a 'standard' ratings protocol as it were, are hard to compare to an extent, but again the Pires Premier league 2001/02 (with some other seasons around that time following not a whole lot lower) compares well in theory (slightly lower than Iniesta 2015/16 which realistically or not...and in line with the unadjusted original ratings or not...is the highest of these 3 in terms of media average ratings published on there - his and Xavi's prime and generally thought of as before their highest listed average rating, and in contrast to the Sofascore ratings Iniesta's averages are a bit higher - it is league games only of course on DBS but I think Xavi's play seems a bit more conducive to regularly high Sofascore grades which some might say does help show he was indeed more integral, whole others might say it over-boosts him in the metrics perhaps in effect....)
*More lenient on longevity/career I had meant to say there. I was trying to finish putting that post together as quick as I could, but hopefully it reads ok other than that omission! (edit: and a few spelling mistakes - mine and/or the so-called spell correction software's!)
I do notice now that Patsy Gallacher has been put as winger/wide forward, and although he is listed on PES Stats with that as his main option (WF), I tended to think he was predominantly an inside forward, so maybe he's one that could be moved to either attacking midfielder or striker/centre forward (with an asterisk). The theoretical line-up talked about on this page does hint at an inside position (with Jackson and Morton as wingers) too: PatsyGallacher (thescotsfootballhistoriansgroup.org) This page talks him up a lot I noticed by the way too! Patsy Gallacher: Remembering the somersaulting Celtic legend | Celtic Way I was kind of wondering whether Sophus Nielsen could get an inclusion or mention among those pre-1930s players too, but that's probably a bit random (there could be quite a few others I guess in theory, but undoubtedly you already have an extensive collection of star players from all eras listed)...
To be honest, any list of this magnitude and scope will ******** over somebody in terms of oversight and lack of proper appreciation. It's why I like to stick to bite-sized topics, even though I do appreciate such knowledge-intensive endeavours. A more interesting thing would be to ask, what was the rough weighting involved when taking into account player performance, and what sort of toolkits the player possessed got valued higher. Because from the looks of things, it does seem like there is a certain mold of player that gets appreciated more on the list. A player with lots of imagination (in terms of doing things that just forces dopamine hits through inspiring moments of wit and ingenuity), certain fluidity with the ball, and the type that gets afforded a lot of creative liscence from the team. I personally think that is a slightly spectator-biased point of view, that doesn't fully weigh the pragmatic effectiveness of a player, but as with all lists of this nature, I can learn more about the players I missed out on.
Yes, but let's not fall out about it here mate (I know he has been a point of contention between us and possibly the main reason for any tetchiness that developed between us - I do acknowledge you wrote this post in a pleasant way even if in effect indicating disagreement on that issue though). It is kind of an impossible/uncertain task to make a top 10 players list I suppose anyway, but for what it's worth it might be Best, Van Basten and Eusebio from the Platinum IIII category I made that I might be inclined towards putting in (but for sure I think Puskas scores as good as most for late career form while also being a very good scorer and creator in one as a young player even if I'd suspect his stats in a later decade would reduce a bit, and Zidane perhaps does pretty well among contenders when it comes to span of years containing some of his best form while being one of the best from a technical viewpoint I think, so looking at things a bit differently could easily put one of those in there I guess). Edit: Correcting an early morning typo (I'd put Zidane's name in Best's place at first by mistake...then mentioned him again as a near miss!) I could be wrong mate, but maybe you refer to my own categories I posted - they fit your observations I think although I guess it's not only a stylistic preference but a genuine high valuation of those sorts of qualities and what they bring to a team. Anyway, I thought I should make the clarification (or ask you to confirm it) so that @joaquimdelblanco1 doesn't assume your comment is about his posts and groupings. Of course it might be, in which case you'll say so I guess! I think my post shouldn't distract from his main topic anyway (even if you indicate perhaps that you're not feeling you're in a position to comment in detail on it), and it wasn't my intention that it should. I'm maybe influenced by Isaias's post being before yours, so could be reading this wrong (it perhaps would be feasible for your comments to apply to joaquim's posts too, I guess).
Well, it is a vague throw-away comment to the general consensus also, there is a good reason why people understandably gravitate towards such players. How many times do people cry extra-harder for teams to properly design and cater towards players, who aren't that easy to utilize, but have playstyle that provokes inspiration within people? To draw from another competitive field, I think Magnus Carlsen once said that he doesn't like to practice versus chess engines such as Stockfish, if I am allowed to paraphrase heavily, due to the feeling that it is like losing to a stupid, non-creative person, void of any inspiration and just blessed with raw effective calculations. In the same vein, I get the feeling people just gravitate towards players who can create inspirational moments, not those who are the most effective in raw pragmatic volumes. I think the players you rated are extremely effective also, but maybe raw effectiveness is not why they were chosen in that specific order. Even for more linear topics such as the fastest players of all-time, everybody will have a different list, with different emphasis on acceleration, agility, turn-rate, speed with the ball, response rate to an opening, timing of the runs, or even just raw sprint volume. I just wanted a more open conversation, since I enjoy reading people taking on tasks of this magnitude. If I just wanted to see a list of players with the most goals or individual awards, I wouldn't come to this forum. People shouldn't start such lists with the fear that they may get mocked if they miss a certain player out, or place them too low.
Well, I don't think our disagreement on C. Ronaldo is due to personal animosity. And my arguments aren't tedious or argumentative solely because of our disagreement. It's not like or I agree with your position or I'm considered tedious/argumentative. The irony is that you're aware of the significance of our disagreement but is unwilling to engage with it seriously. On one hand you say that it's impossible to create a top 10 players list. On the other hand you present your own subjective list. I would like to know if you have any evidence or logical reasoning to support your claim that C. Ronaldo isn't top 10. It's unclear for me how those factors you mentioned (late career form, span of years, technical ability) are weighted/prioritized. You often mention the subjective nature of creating a top 10 list but it doesn't excuse the lack of evidence/logical reasoning to support your claim.
The irony is that you once contacted me regularly by PM, and engaged in a pleasant and respectful way (much different to this post) knowing full well my post history and views about C.Ronaldo. Now you chase me around demanding a thesis on why C.Ronaldo might not be top 10, even knowing he might be a rapist, while I'm a nice guy (ok you have to trust me there, but I think it's true, even on here most of the time) and suffer with anxiety (that doesn't make it 'correct' to make a top 10 without him but maybe I deserve the respect you originally did show me - in this thread you kind of went back to it briefly by calling me "mate" though I guess - I think my reply was ok enough and it's this reply by you that really is not!). Maybe my posts are all worthless and I shouldn't post anymore? I certainly wish I hadn't posted on this thread now to be honest (or at least that I hadn't made the tiers I did). My guesstimate (as I said in the original post) was based largely on perception of if all the players were playing in the same era (including consistency as a factor though), but with in effect bonuses for longevity and for big game performances and suchlike too, I'd say, for what it's worth. That's the truth. But there is no definitive truth about what the order might be, only opinion/estimation. Notice I said I wouldn't/don't argue with the one joaquim himself came up with (and his very impressive overall attempt which really should be the primary focus here IMO). You can think ideas about C.Ronaldo not shining so much when his team isn't the best are nonsense for example, but you can't demand that everyone has the same perception, including me, can you? Please leave me alone now if you can't regain the former level of respect "mate".
What I would concede, if that's the right word, would be that especially when the word 'greatest' was used in the title (according to the common way that word would be used now - on another viewpoint about the word somebody being of bad character or doing bad deeds would indeed detract from 'greatness' though I suppose or vice versa someone who was especially friendly or a good example might enhance their 'greatness' - but that isn't a common thing factored in the way it's generally seen I think anyway) probably my methodology in making those tiers was incompatible with the thread anyway. Although still at this point (maybe it can change which would be nice) I'm the first and only one to give joaquim any feedback, any reps and any comments. So maybe my contribution isn't worthless in that respect anyway (and hopefully some other posts I make on the forum over the years weren't worthless) whatever anyone might think about me allegedly under-rating C.Ronaldo.
But at what point in my message did I disrespect you? I have ADHD but that doesn't justify my position just as having anxiety does not justify yours. It's just an appeal to pity. Whether C. Ronaldo are or not a rapist it is irrelevant to the discussion of football rankings. It's just an ad hominem attack. What's more It's not like the fact that I disagree with you automatically qualifies me as disrespectful. Ironically you accuse me of being disrespectful to you and simultaneously you are being disrespectful to me. You recognize the subjective nature of football rankings but then become defensive when your opinion is challenged. Again, you have not provided any evidence/logical reasoning to support your claim that C. Ronaldo isn't top 10. You just state your opinion and become defensive when questioned. Your criteria seem to be inconsistent. You mention "perception, concistency, longevity and big game performances" but it's unclear how these factors are weighted/prioritized. Again, you repeatedly emphasizes the subjective nature of football rankings but this doesn't excuse the lack of evidence/reasoning to support your claim.
You make a great case for Pires and a great video too, many of these clips I don't think I've ever seen. Sorry I didn't realise there were further comments on the post, I usually get emailed. I'm typically a bit more leniant when it comes to longevity too, but it can vary depending on certain things. Thanks for the info on Gallacher. Sophus Nielsen was on my shortlist but I had quite a few strikers ahead of him that aren't mentioned and had to stop listing them somewhere, but utimately the margins are more difficult to separate with older players so he's always someone who could make it eventually if I was to realise new things about him
I've never thought too deeply about personal biases towards certain types of players, but I think you assessed mine quite accurately, not that it was ever intentional from myself. I don't consider myself to have a huge tactical knowledge of the game, at least compared to the expertise you might find on a site like this, and maybe those who do will appreciate some individuals differently for example. But I think the fact that the way I judge players is probably a little more in line with the general consensus from media, fans etc. can help keep the lists more consistent across different decades for players we didn't see
Just to add because of what people were discussing, anyone is welcome to disagree with or criticize any player positions or the ranking in general, to get more substantive opinions can only help. I've upgraded Andreolo and downgraded Adriano since I posted this and I'm sure I'll make changes in future.
I wanted to join in, firstly because I do not like the assertion that all lists must pay proper homage to one player in particular, and secondly because I do think I like Robert Pires also, but more-so as a spectator. I personally would guess the process used to select Robert Pires over Ryan Giggs might reveal the some of the methodology that allows a player to be rated higher than usual. By my own personal metrics, it is hard to justify the placement of Robert Pires over Ryan Giggs. Ryan Giggs was faster than Robert Pires. He was fitter than Robert Pires. He could beat his man, provide a cross, track back, and repeat the process innumerable number of times across the length of the game at a mechanical rate that even a pre-injury Robert Pires would struggle to match. If I could access their heatmaps, I would assume Ryan Giggs' heatmap would be more vertical, whilst Robert Pires was more centrally involved in the plays of the team. Pires was sometimes absolved of the usual up-and-down movements that takes its toll physically, tracking back, then still being relied upon to beat his man, in a raw duel of mechanical speed, balance, and most importantly, stamina. With that creative freedom, Pires flourished. Not merely as a winger, but a game-changing playmaker. He orchestrated sequences with immense grace, minimal forceful or awkward plays, full of wit and imagination, and most importantly did it with effectiveness. For both club and country, although the stint was short-lived in nature. If Thierry Henry was the most devastating weapon for Arsenal, and Bergkamp the most elegant and brilliant in moments, I would personally say Pires was the most captivating to watch. He literally ran the show, with grace, intelligence, brevity, and in a manner that synchronized brilliantly with his teammates. You could literally watch keep your eyes locked on the dude, and watch the attack sequences unfold before your eyes in a beautiful manner. Although he wasn't that hard-working, he made up for it with his brilliant manipulation of attacking sequences, via his on-the-ball talents, awareness of those around him, and understanding of space. The problem is that his assets and effectiveness are somewhat limited within the scope I've described. He isn't the most devastating individual one-versus-one winger, nor is he the most hard working like Pavel Nedved. It was up to the team to fit the pieces around him. Yes, I believe a prime Ryan Giggs never could have played Robert Pires' function with such effectiveness, whilst retaining that particular aesthetic. The problem is that Giggs never was that reliant on being such a profile of a player to ensure success or longevity. He was a man of many talents, not just raw playmaking. How many players are afforded a never-ending wave of support of such tactical luxuries, and can contribute confined specifically to this role for years that assures longevity? Further along the spectrum in this discussion, we arrive at Cristiano Ronaldo. He ranks very highly for me in terms of overall effectiveness across the years. However, if you view him through the lense of how Robert Pires was appreciated, there is a forceful mechanical nature with which Cristiano Ronaldo approaches the game. He isn't the same type of player, and he certainly isn't as fun to watch as prime Robert Pires for me. If the metric is how well you did as a player given the role of the mastermind behind attacks, as well as being skilled enough to be aesthetically pleasing to be noticeable whilst doing it, and this concludes with players of this nature gets extra-credit for their level of peak effectiveness or longevity, I do see a consistent criteria across the list.
I just want to clarify again that I never intended to be coming over like I suggested that I was 'improving upon' the lists in the OP (and groupings) - not the placements or the methodology used. I just happened to post my own idea, and I think we should all be free to have those and share them, as long as they are honest. I just struggle to get too far away from thinking the way I do about comparing players at their best as the main criteria (as uncertain as that has to be, and with a certain element of benefit of the doubt and/or automatic allowance for intrinsic differences due to training and fitness in theory that any player time-warping into later times could adapt to - it might allow them to play with more intensity through a game and suchlike), even if like I say I also tend to give a degree of significance to longevity and big game/tournament performances and suchlike in a 'top players' list now, more than ever. But yeah, considering that, I do have some doubts in terms of players from earlier times, including for a player like Di Stefano even (I can look at footage on a good day and think yeah potentially he can be right up there I think, then see a less impressive performance and be more doubtful....remembering though that most of the available full performance footage we can see comes from a time he was actually pretty old in footballer terms). I didn't check but maybe this Pires goal that I always liked wasn't on that compilation IIRC Goal of the Day: Robert Pires vs Blackburn Rovers | Describe Arsenal's Robert Pires in ONE word __________________ | By The Emirates FA CupFacebook | Facebook Maybe not this one for Marseille vs Chelsea either (although what was good about that video I posted I think was the wide range of footage and that it wasn't solely focused on end product) 1999/2000 : OM-Chelsea et le but de Pirès - video Dailymotion I feel like peak to peak there is an argument for Pires over Giggs (not dismissing young Giggs though, or even 2001/02 Giggs even if that season is when Pires won the FWA Player of the Year award himself of course in England). If I went majorly on full career with big weight the argument for Pires over Giggs would be much harder to make I suppose though. I think the way I think about it I give some leeway for players with career-changing/limiting injuries (eg Van Basten, Ronaldo Nazario) or early deaths (eg Duncan Edwards - again I'm unsure if I might be rating him higher than I would with more access to his game footage in general though, even if vice versa is also possible). Maybe the same to an extent can apply to Pires, although actually he came back from his injury and was a very effective and efficient player again still for a while. I guess it could be suggested that Pires was like an upgrade (I say as a Nottingham Forest fan) on a John Robertson for example, with more physical capability especially pre-injury, more flair and ingenuity and more of a multi-faceted end product, while Giggs perhaps an upgrade (in my estimation if trying to make a direct comparison) on a Francisco Gento with I think better fluidity and balance when running with the ball and more finesse (when he got them right) on shots and passes/crosses with his left leg....(keeping in mind my viewing of Gento is also somewhat limited though of course), perhaps more in the way of effective defensive contribution too (including slide tackles)....
I'm guessing Joaquim's posts were more about greatness within own eras too than my estimations. In a way that does make sense or is easier I think. It's not only that I could potentially over-estimate a Di Stefano in real terms (I'm not saying I think that's the case, just that it could be), but vice versa too - with much more footage available I could suddenly decide in theory that I think Adolfo Pedernera was better than Kenny Dalglish or something (it seems conceivable, even if also speculative and it's hard to be convinced of it without said compelling and prolonged footage to 'verify' the idea properly). Maybe I could think a Giussepe Meazza was not only better than Rivera or Baggio, but better than either Ronaldo too (I suspect I wouldn't, largely because of differences in athleticism, but I can't truly be sure I guess)...or I could think he wasn't actually better overall as a player than an Eden Hazard or a Butragueno or various more modern players.... But yeah it's hard for me to get away from at least thinking about theoretical direct comparisons, even if when it comes to a player like Bobby Walker I'm even more clueless (I just see the references to him being the best ever British player in some opinions in the times of Alex James, or the times of Stanley Matthews, and so it's difficult to conclude that no pre-1930s player could come anywhere close to a list of all-time best if taking those kinds of views literally anyway).
Sorry about getting a bit angry/upset with Isaias's post by the way yesterday, and the references to being a nice guy while C.Ronaldo might be a rapist etc (I suppose I was just thinking Isaias that this is the guy you are falling out with me about, and you have to admit I always responded positively and pleasantly to you when you sent me those private messages and was trying to also keep things calm between you and another Brazilian guy and advising a calm and friendly approach etc when you were falling out with him I remember). Anyway, the player in theory completing my top 10 and being highest placed Portuguese was a pretty special player for example, I think: Soccer Sweden vs Portugal 1967 (youtube.com) Czechoslovakia - Portugal 1965 World Cup Qualification (Eusébio Scoring) - YouTube 尤西比奥 ● Eusébio in 1966 FIFA World Cup ● By Foolishpan (youtube.com) ECC 1967-68. SL Benfica - Juventus. Eusebio scores. (youtube.com)
I guess nowadays there is much more focus/obsession about using formulas and spreadsheets etc to come to decisions, but in the past I don't think it was like that so much (not that basic stats were completely overlooked as such), and it's not how I put together my listing or had ever thought about the 'best players ever' topic myself. If what is being requested is some guide to my thought process in the form of a breakdown then I would say it's something like 75% based on peak form (with consistency over the short-term being a part of that, not that it's necessarily easy to be sure about it in a lot of cases or all cases to some extent - if you like a figure here too maybe 25% on consistency and the other 50% purely prime best form but I didn't aim to be so precise about that and I'm not totally sure those numbers would reflect things absolutely as such). Then perhaps 13% longevity and 12% big game/tournament performance. That's about as good a guide to how I thought about things as I can give. I hope that can be the end of that now. Like I said Eusebio in 10th in my estimated idea was a superb player IMO, certainly a player with great end product as well as one who brought a lot of energy and dynamism. He also performed very well and decisively in big games often as the videos I posted help to show. And his longevity isn't exactly bad, being a star of most of the 60s and a notable player around 1973 still too for sure. So that's not a low bar to enter the top 10 by any means.
If it helps, this is what I give as a brief explanation to player evaluations. How the players are assessed: It goes without saying, the assessment of the players I use will never be as accurate as seeing them play live. I have however put a few years of research into this and refined it as well as I can by collating all the data and opinions available. I've used a range of factors, which culminates in an assessment of players that I believe works well. Maybe most importantly, it has an accurate correlation to my opinion of players when using it to evaluate players from the modern era, so I trust my research methods. The evaluation of players is generally based on a players peak over a 4-5 year period. In my opinion, this period is long enough to assess a player's standard, and exhibits a certain level of consistency. However, a long (or short) peak can add to how highly I would rate a player, if they show themselves to be adaptable (or not) to different tactical systems, opponents, levels of pressure, their own physical changes, etc. Some of the main factors of assessing players (some which play into each other) : Historical match ratings (eg. Archived newspapers, DBS Calcio) Annual or weekly World/League XI's (eg. Kicker Team of the Week/Season, Onze De Onze) Individual Award Rankings (eg. Don Balon Award, Balon D'Or) Historical statistical based rankings (eg. IFFHS, WhoScored) Reputable/respected opinionated lists/data/nominations (eg. World Soccer, FIFPRO) Other reputable opinions (eg. Specialist consultants/researchers, fan forums, articles, ex-players) Watching footage Trophies won My own opinion Many other smaller factors With all these factors, I use as many good sources as I can possibly find. They must all be taken in context. They can be weighted differently depending on the standard of competition, which I evaluated as accurately as I could. The competition can be judged by standard of players, success of clubs in continental competitions, etc. There are sometimes anomalies of a lack of correlation with players' factors, which could be down to things such as the personality of a player, sentimentality, bias and propaganda. I take this into consideration where the information is available. The time difference between players however isn't a factor I consider - it is too nuanced of an argument. Some may favour modern players who are much faster, stronger, fitter; while some may favour older players who dealt with two-footed tackles, terrible pitches, & innovated aspects of the game. The idea of throwing players into different eras and tactical systems wouldn't work well, so I found it best to judge them on what they are/were relevant to the time.
