I'm constantly shocked to see what people have taken the time to release in the hot new digital format when many other quality films lie waiting. What are some great movies not available on DVD? For purposes of this excercise let's say movies that aren't on DVD in your region. For example "Rude Boy" is available as a Reg. 2 but not Reg. 1 DVD, So that's considered unvailable to me, though not to someone living in the UK. And while it's certainly not a great film, I love it. Great stuff not available: Onibaba d. Kaneto Shindo - dvd in Japan only. This is a feckin' crime. Kings of the Road (In Lauf der Zeit) d. Wim Wenders - not currently available in any format the Killer - d. John Woo - this was mentioned in another discussion about the Criterion Collection, but it really should be re-released in any edition. Permanent Vacation - d. Jim Jarmusch - not currently available in any format. A student film of his that used to get the occassional run out on Bravo years ago. Stunning.
The Dark at the Top of the Stairs. Awesome dialogue movie. One of the finest acted films I've ever seen. You can catch it on AMC or TCM every now and again, but usually in the wee hours of the night. It's a shame, really, that it's not on DVD.
A couple of other Wim Wenders films could really use a release - Wings of Desire (due this spring, maybe?) and the FULL CUT of Until the End of the World. I really liked the full four-hour Hamlet with Branaugh, so I'd like to see that. But The Killer being unavailable is a crime against humanity. RS
I remember when I first saw the Criterion Collection website. I saw this, got really excited and then saw that it was no longer available. Somebody needs to re-release this. When I first got digital cable it was on every other night. If I had known better I would have recorded it a long time ago.
It's a concert film but I want "Urgh! A Music War". A documentary of the best bands of the late 70's, early 80's. Police, OMD, XTC, Go-Go's, Devo, Echo and the Bunnymen, Au Pairs, Pere Ubu, Gang of Four, X, Magazine, Cramps, Dead Kennedys are all on it.
Good news for Wenders fans, "Wings of Desire" is set to be released in July on DVD. Check your normal retail source. I've got it preordered from Amazon. Agree re: "Urgh". There's some great concert footage on there. Echo & the Bunnymen's version of "the Puppet" slays. The Au Pairs, Alleycats, Go Gos, Cramps, Steel Pulse, Athletico Spizz, etc. It's all too good. Even the crap stuff (Klaus Nomi, Spuldugneous Abounds) is kinda interesting.
I can't imagine that those will ever be released while Lucas is still alive. It's a shame, really. Just like Speilberg with E.T.. They're such arrogant bastards that way. Just release the films the way they were made originally, you dicks.
Sansho the Bailiff freaking awesome movie. Black Rain the Japanese version, not that American piece of crap. Cyclo as mentioned earlier, Star Wars trilogy and Indiana Jones stuff. thankfully, The Producers is now available, although it took a Broadway musical to get it on DVD.

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - I was gobsmacked to find this isn't available. I mean "the Man Who Fell to Earth" is out there for cheap. I agree re: La Strada. That's a sin agains cinema. Apparently La Dolce Vita is slated for release sometime soon. Thank God, all of the "Nightmare On Elm Street" franchise films are available.
I was just about to post (hell, I'm doing it anyway) Bad Company, and not the lousy Chris Rock version but the 1972 Western classic with Jeff Bridges, probably my favorite Western ever, due to the mix of comedy and gritty realism. However, I just found out it has been released on DVD (well, it will be out in May, so I guess technically it isn't out on DVD yet).....so it's going to the top of my purchase list
