No doubt the highest numbers went to Cancela, Twellman, Joseph, Pierce, Noonan, and Adin, with Kamler, and his 1st half of the season goal scoring, giving us a nice left-side option, below that first tier.

I would give the team as a whole a C+ to this point.

They reached the MLS Cup final last year and were favorites to retain their Eastern Conference championship. So let's remember that expectations were pretty high.
The team has gone from decent (start) to poor (annual midseason swoon) to pretty good (right now).
In midseason it had a decided lack of character with some really really poor results, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. But they've turned that around and are now showing positive character.

If you check how the players are rated in Europe's major leagues, the vast majority of ratings are between 4.5 and 7.0.
I don't think there is any player on this team that deserves more than a 7.0 average on a realistic scale if 5.0 is considered average for a professional player.

the only people favoring the Revs to retain the ECC was Revs fans and very few journalists. Everybody was picking the Crew, New Look Metrostars, or DC. They figured the luck rubbed off. I give the team itself a B+. They sit in second, 3rd overall. Thats pretty damn good considering they had a winless streak of 9 games.

Don't you ever have anything nice to say about the Revs?

If i was to grade the three parts of their season begining, middle and now it'd probably be B, D+, A- that's not to say that I'd give them a final grade of a C+ but I just think it's interesting how this team has wound up, they've seemingly really gelled as a team once it was determined that certain things just weren't working. I dunno, maybe its just the crazy parity of this league. Either way it's pretty interesting that they're putting together another late season run. Final grade for the season as to where they've wound up so far, I'd say B+. A very solid team that plays very well at times and gets resulats, and other times looks like it couldn't have ever done anything. Obviously how they do in the playoffs will go a long way in determining the legacy this year's team has.

    Good points Maxim.

However, to be fair, they'd probably get an incomplete overall.

Looking back, this was a rollercoaster ride. A few highs. A few lows. And a lot of dead air in between.

And, they went about two months without getting a win [forget the ties]. You don't get style points for that sort of thing. In no other professional sport can you do that and still have fans show up. No other.

How they do in the playoffs should be the equivalent of their final exam.

I still would like to know how this team, with as much talent as we have this year was so ineffective during those two months. Same players (almost) and same coach and yet they go from a roster that showed a singular lack of character to a team that shows real grit and style even starting bench players. Anyone have any insights why we seem to fade in the warmer months? It's got to be more than the heat.

I remember alot of it was due to bad luck, except the DC breakdown. Balls were taking bad bounces and calls weren't going there way, or shots off the crossbar resulting in a fast break and eventual goal. The luck got better and the Revs started winning again. The Crew are suffering that now.

    Chris Brown(M-F) - 5.5

    Jose Cancela (M) (S-I/DISC) - 9.0

Leo Cullen(M) - 5.5 (includes kudos for accepting demotion gracefully)

    Dario Fabbro (F) (S-I/DISC) - 4.0

    Joe Franchino(D) - 5.5

    Chris Bagley (F) (DEV) - 5.0

    Tony Frias (M) (DEV) - 2.0

    Jay Heaps (D-M) - 4.0

    Shalrie Joesph (M) - 8.5

    Brian Kamler (M) - 7.0

    Daouda Kante(D) (S-I) - 4.0 (but rising...)

    Ibrahim Kante (F) (DEV) - 5.0

    Marshall Leonard (M) (DEV) - 6.0

    Carlos Llamosa (D) - 5.5 (also rising)

    Jason Moore (M) - 4.0

    Joe-Max Moore (F) - 5.5

    Pat Noonan (F) - 7.0

    Rusty Pierce (D) - 8.0

    Steve Ralston (M) - 6.5

    Taylor Twellman (F) - 8.5

    Adin Brown (GK) - 8.5

    Matt Reis (GK) - 5.0

    Kyle Singer (GK) - 5.0

This basically gives me a top 5 of Cancela, Joseph, Pierce, Twellman and Brown, followed by Kamler, Noonan, and Ralston. While I gave the highest score to Cancela, I'd rate Adin, Shalrie, and Rusty (clearly the defense is not the same without him) as more important. I'd rate Joseph as the most important. The main reason that we can put someone like Cancela on the pitch is because Shalrie covers so much more space than Cullen or DH. While Ralph will probably get the rookie of the year, and Noonan could actually get more votes than Shalrie, I doubt there's been another rookie as valuable as Joseph this year.

I agree, and I don't think there's been another DMid as valuable as Joseph, either.

Taylor and Joseph was an unbelieveable haul in one draft...

Disagree with your comments on Cancela, though. I think that, especially when you compare him with the other offensive mids in the league, he is a very good and conscientious defender.

That is probably my favorite thing about him- he's as talented as any player we've ever had, but he doesn't play like he's disgusted by the players around him, as some have in the past (and present).

I agree completely with the comments about Cancella and Joseph. Sad to say, that considering the national soccer media's (and MLSnet literati's) obsession with things Metros, Fire, and Galaxy (and sometimes DC), I doubt many soccer pundits could spell Pepe's or Bully's name.

I'm not saying that Cancela's a bad defender. My point was that he can play in front of Joseph in a more offensive role. If we were playing Leo or DH at D-mid, Jose would have to backtrack more and have more defensive responsibilities in our half of the field.
