Why are Gremio so called please? ...and is it true that Tostao's 'name' was so called after the name of the lowest value Brazilian coin? Just curious!!
Grêmio, Tostão and Flamengo Tostão is like a penny. It was the lowest denomination in older Brazilian currency (when it was "Cruzeiro", Tostão was 10 cents). Tostão would be the nickname for the smallest kid. Grêmio is the same (and short) for Agremiação which is a word used to mean Association, usually Sport Association. Flamengo comes from Praia do Flamengo, the location of the original Rowing Team. The Beach has this name because there the French tried to invade Rio de Janeiro under the command of Villegagnion who probably was Flemish (Flamengo).

Carioca but not Fluminense Botafogo is also named for the Beach. There was also a rowing team in the Praia de Botafogo. Now, Bota-fogo means to burn something, more like to torch something. That I don't know why. Fluminense comes fro the latin flumen ( a river). Fluminense original Tennis Club is near the mountains (Where Christ The Redeeemer is). That is the origin of the River Carioca, that went down to Praia do Flamengo. So, Fluminense means related to the river (either Rio Carioca or Rio de Janeiro). People from Rio de Janeiro City are called Carioca, from the rest of Rio de Janeiro State are called Fluminense. Carioca is the name that the Indians gave to original settlers Cari=Stone Oca=House.

Grêmio escapes relegation! Not even the gremistas could believe it. After 20 straight rounds in the last positions of Brasileirão 2003, Grêmio made a impressive comeback in the lastest games and escaped relegation. There were pitch invasions during the Grêmio 3-0 Corinthians match of the last round of the championship to cellebrate their permanence amongst the elite of Brasileiro.

Grêmio and Porto Alegre My brother knows that I love football. He generously bought me a football kit for Hanukkah. He knows nothing about football and bought me a Gremio kit only because he liked the way it looked. I am curious about not only the club, but also the region of Brazil. What are the supporters like; left wing or riight wing? How would you describe their style of play? What is Porto Alegre like culturally, politically, and geographically? What type of races, food, and industry are they known for or are common in Porto Alegre? Thank you very much for your time and help.

Ronaldinho Gaucho started playing at Grêmio and their biggest star now is Anderson, who is going to Portugal (Porto or Benfica, can't remember now). Did you get the vertically striped shirt? That is a very beautiful one. Porto Alegre is a great city and it's located on the state of Rio Grande do Sul. It's the most southern state of Brazil. People in the south have mostly european origin, but in Brazil we have people migrating everywhere. Rio Grande do Sul is famous for their barbecue, because they produce high quality meat. A person born in Rio Grande do Sul is called a Gaúcho (or Gaúcha, if is a female). We also call them Gayúchos because they are also famous for being homossexuals I don't think here in Brazil teams have much of a political allignment. Grêmio's biggest rival is Internacional, who lost the title to Corinthians this year. The word Grêmio is something like a fraternity. Not the feeling. The organization.
