Falko Gotz is the new Hertha coach after Hans Meyer told the club that he would stay with his decision to retire after this season.

Can Gotz turn around the fortunes of Hertha BSC?

I think Dieter Hoeness is the problem there and his constant signing of new strikers. But Gotz did very well when he got the chance last time he is loved by the fans there, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Hertha in the top 3 next year.

Regardless of who coaches, I think this season exposed Hertha as an ordinary team at best (I know they fooled me). They seem wholly dependent on Marcelinho for inspiration and creativity on attack, and given his erratic play and character, that's not a recipe for extended success. Apart from Marcelinho, who else would you want from that club (assuming you are an elite BL team)? Friedrich, for sure, but after that? I think Hertha will be much better next season, but a UEFA cup spot would be a wild success for them.

Their midfield needs the most work, they need more depth. Goor and Marx, their best midfielders, were injured for much of the season. Pinto has played well, but just for a few weeks, Karwan has been the biggest bust (even over Wichnarek and Bobic), Dardai is ordinary at best, and Kovac was another huge bust.

They also need another defender; Rehmer and van Burik have been out of sorts all season and injured as well.

The young guns have played well, however; Madlung, Fathi, Chahed, Rafael and Cagara have held their own in the Bundesliga, which will only make Hertha stronger for the future. But the present is more pressing for them...they need new players for the next campaign still.

How's the money situation in Berlin? Will they be able to be active on the transfer market? It seemed to me that with their relegation scare this year that Hertha supporters weren't showing up to Olympic Stadium in the same numbers as last year.
