This is a good thread. And it relates to something I've been thinking about a lot in recent days. One of the big mistakes that the Democrats have made in recent years is all but conceding young men (especially white young men) to Trump. They aren't speaking to them where they are, and they aren't addressing the real anxieties that are causing their reactionary flight to Trump. Not saying the Democrats could have won this group, but they could have (and should have) done a much better job minimizing their losses with them.
It's really important because there is a serious national problem with those guys, as they are dropping out of the work force, are turning to drugs, and are disillusioned with the American Way. Trump is using their resentment and won't do anything to help them, but someone has to.
I'm worried this describes my middle nephew, although he's got two things going for him: 1) my sister is a good Mom and they have a genuinely close relationship. That alone might be enough to pull him back from the abyss. 2) he seems genuinely driven by empathy and outrage at how the system fails others as much as himself. At least the last I knew. And he's apparently back in the job market and even considering working his way back to college (he's the sort of kid who SHOULD go to college, to be clear) so maybe the danger has already passed. But COVID isolated him socially at the worst possible time (late adolescence) and for a while there it looked like the damage was chronic.
Nikki Haley chose the only path that would ensure than everyone detested her after this election. Run against Trump, then endorse Trump, then rip Trump, but still support Trump. Dems in disarray!!!! If you think Laura Loomer is an example of what Republicans should act like, you don’t need my vote.— 🐊🇺🇸Kate 🇺🇸🐊 (@KateW1970) October 30, 2024
I don't know - a hung bull certainly would, but a hung cao? That might make people think he's trans or something.
https://politicalwire.com/2024/11/12/mike-johnson-will-get-a-challenger-in-speaker-election/ Yes. YES. Ha, ha, ha, Yes.
This is my one faint glimmer of hope. Just as I'm wired to expect that Democrats will fcuk up up the politics, I'm also wired to expect that Republicans will fcuk up the governance. There is a bit of truth to P.J. O'Rourke's old line: "The Republicans are the party that says government doesn't work and then they get elected and prove it."
I have zero doubt that they'll ******** up the governing. Whether or not that will cost them their grip on power is another matter.
