What specifically did that approach accomplish for them? And more importantly for the American people and their constituents? and this time it is Dem action that put us here.
No, it was the actions of Matt Gaetz and his friends who put us here. The Democrats did not put us here - their votes have not changed at all from January to now regarding the Speaker.
The double standard that Republicans can be as irresponsible as they want and Democrats always have to be the grown-ups or else they own the mess, is bullshit. Republicans have the majority - they own the whole thing.
Ali Vitali @alivitali NEW: Some House Dem mods have received calls from GOP counterparts asking them to vote to save McCarthy’s job, four sources familiar tell @nbcnews . One source describing those calls as “begging,” another describing them as “temperature taking.” W/ @GarrettHaake @ryanobles
It’s about the end game. The Dems played this same game in January and what resulted was a speaker completely beholden to the extremists in the GOP. Exactly how is doubling down on this approach going to result in a better outcome? While I enjoy laughing at the disfunction of the GOP as much as the next guy…and some point the house has to govern. And I’d argue that a GOP speaker constrained by rules that Dems play a big part in drafting is a much better place than the alternatives
I'm watching the vote... MTG voted "NO" on removing McCarthy? Wasn't she part of the nutbags that wanted him out?
Republicans have agency. If they did not want chaos, they should not have given the majority to their chaos agent wing. I don't see how this can be pinned on democrats at all.
I am confused by this reasoning. So the Dems have to save the GOPers from their own disfunction. Why on planet earth Jeffries would let his caucus vote for a pathological liar, w/out some written commitments and rule changes? This is beyond BS! PS. 6 GOP yes. We may have crossed the Rubicon already....Kevin is no more speaker if the Dems hold the line as expected.
I don't think that's what's being suggested at all, although it would be part of the fallout, yes. Why? If there's any reason to believe not doing so would result in an even-worse outcome, of course.
Friends, Republicans, Countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to bury KMac, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them, The good is oft with the Democrats. So let it be with KMac. The noble Gaetz Hath told you that KMac was foolish; If it were so, he has finally spoke truth, And the truth is that KMac hath fallen. Here, under leave of Gaetz and his klan - For Gaetz is an honorable man; So are they all, all honorable...perhaps; Come I to Speak at KMac's funeral. I could say that he was friend and faithful: But Gaetz said he was ambitious; And Gaetz is an honorable man...perhaps. I speak not to mock of the man Gaetz, But I am here to speak of what I know. There was love and hate for KMac: Shall we come together and mourn his loss? O judgement! thou art fled to brutish beasts, And men have lost their reason. Bear with me; My heart standeth beside the coffin of KMac And I just pause as joy hath returned! - Floor speech by Speaker Jeffries, as he defeats McCarthy for Speakership.
This stuff has ben debated at length here. I trust the House Dems and their leadership know what they are doing by not supporting Kevin.
Expecting a New York Times Pitchbot post: Kevin McCarthy lost the vote of his own party; how the Democrats are to blame.
I didn't know about that part of the process...... What’s Next by Josh Marshall Kevin McCarthy lost the first procedural vote. It now seems almost certain that he’ll lose the real vote and be ousted from the Speakership. Then the House Clerk will reveal a letter in which McCarthy placed a list of names of people who could serve as Speaker pro tem if McCarthy could no longer serve. The first name on that list will almost certainly be a loyalist. So we’ll have McCarthy ousted but almost certainly still determined to reclaim the chair. The temporary Speaker will be one of his loyalists. It’s unclear whether that new temporary Speaker will have to start holding elections for a new Speaker literally immediately or whether he has a bit of flexibility. That person will almost certainly make that choice in the interests of McCarthy regaining the Speakership.
This is truly dereliction of duty from J Martin. Truly garbage on the day the GOP is self immolating. What a f**** hack. Jonathan Martin @jmart Line of succession: A smart Repub notes that we're on verge of having a soon-to-be-81-year-old potus, a vp w scant experience on world stage (to be charitable) and a vacancy in the speakership
That's fine, and I'm not trying to persuade you otherwise. I'm just answering the specific questions that you asked.
Bad move, clown That awkward moment when you beg people you insult daily to save you.https://t.co/a1A8dAYsWI— Tea Pain (@TeaPainUSA) October 3, 2023
Was the bolded even on the table? I think Kev himself said he would not approach the dems with any proposals to get their support. So, not sure how those rules would be drafted and adopted by the House.
