gives some good insight in to his time at everton... http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=brianmcbrideftr&prov=st&type=lgns
Excellent piece. Nice insights into the impact on Brian's personal life. And I was intrigued by the short bit at the end about transfer possibilities. It's by Jamie Trecker. I get the feeling that some time in the recent past, he realized that his blind hatred of American soccer not only made him look like a jackass, but it also was a bad career move. Soccer fans are kind of cultish, and one thing about cult fans, they know their stuff. So when Trecker would mis-state facts, and it got back to his editors (and I'm sure it did), he probably found himself in a precarious situation. He's fair. That's all we've ever asked.
Part of me wants him to stay so I can see him a few times a year on TV and at United games. The rest of me wants him to go the Everton full time and win more respect for American players in Europe. The thing is, I don't know which part is larger.
Nitpicking time - "I've spent nine years in Columbus. Uh, Brian, you didn't get drafted by the Crew till 96. Did you really start living in Ohio in 94? Or Lou Manetti's pizza in Chicago. It's the best pizza in the world. I suppose there are things here that we would like, but we don't know about them." My wife is from the NW Chicago suburbs and she is always talking about how she misses this pizza place and everytime we go back we go there. In fairness, it is good pizza. But, it's spelled, according to her, Malnati's, not Manetti's.
i think this was an error by trecker, everyone that has eaten pizza in chicago or knows someone from chicago knows that it is malnati's but i guess jamie failed to follow-up and check before submitting the article. still a great article though...
i think you are fairly dead on, he just hasn't placed himself in anyone's favorite status by completely blowing facts (and i wouldn't necessarily say misspelling a pizza place would be a blown fact... more of a miscommunication between the two, but then again... it's not liked he, or anyone else, checked up on it to make sure he had the right name)
It's a nice article, but it's a bit naive to say that Everton is making a run at the EPL championship. They aren't going to make up 12 points in 10 games to Arsenal AND jump over ManU, Newcastle and Chelsea. Fact-checking aside, is it really that hard to write about soccer without making statements like that?
"Even if Everton could put together the possible $6 million to sign McBride ..." Six million?? That's a lot beer and bratwurst! I think MLS's expectations would be a little more reasonable than that.
Wasn't Reyna's transfer fee $5.6 million? Egads it seems Sunderland's gamble to stay in the Premier League flopped a great deal. Where will Claudio be next year, since I really doubt he'd stay at Sunderland. That team has no prayer of avoiding relegation, right? As for McBride, I think he's considering the odds of starting after Rooney is back. He's playing very well right now, and it would be a shame to waste all that talent stitting on a bench.
