This is the NWSL-iest gold medal match you could've gotten once USA and CAN ended up on the same side of the bracket. Also: Swedish refs, huh? With the well-known USA/Sweden WoSo history, that's just playing into the Hollywood ending of Marta finally getting her gold!
Who can blame you? Common sense tells you Smith is "involved in the play" But common sense is about the last thing involved in refereeing these days how on earth did Sophia Smith *not* interfere with play from an offside position there? she charged towards the ball and totally changed the response of the defenders??? #BRAvUSA— Samantha Lewis (@battledinosaur) August 10, 2024 if you have to take into account Smith's run, how it obscures the pass, and is a metre or less away from the ball, even if she doesn't touch it, she is having an effect on the play. offside all day, but would love to hear from a ref. pic.twitter.com/SUCKGGWN83— Theo Lloyd-Hughes (@theolloydhughes) August 10, 2024
Huh... Well, USA goes another cycle with a major title. I was honestly hoping for Marta to finally get her gold this time around...
Julie Foudy was complaining about how tired the soccer teams were, with only 18 players allowed (I think) for each team, and games every 2 days, plus traveling. I did notice the number of bb players allowed was 12 (5 playing at any one time) plus they apparently had about 30 coaches/managers per team. Facebook had a picture of the US women's gymnastics therapy golden retriever, so there is that. Also, the US GK was spectacular.
Olympic matches were 72 hours apart, and Final match teams had 96 hours for rest+prep. The problem here is that FIFA WWC and IOC Olympics run through consecutive summers, so that will break players during the second major tournament. FIFA avoided unnecessary injuires on the men's side by nerfing men's Olympic football with non-mandatory u-23 squads.
Please tell me she's done now. She is just vile. I watched her in the Current/Orlando match. She should have been tossed, but she gets Messi handling. Brazil is a better team without her.
The referee and VAR discussion on the goal would be interesting to hear. Smith is obviously in offside position and the interference is very much a grey area and that's the problem here.
I think these posts provide clarity on today's rules and why the goal stands: https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/r...estionable-calls.2131363/page-3#post-42452694 https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/u...al-pre-pbp-post.2132023/page-14#post-42452683 https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/r...estionable-calls.2131363/page-3#post-42452147
The main conversation at the moment is taking place in the USA Forum but it's also been discussed (surprise) in the Referee Assignments and Questinable Calls thread here in the International Forum / OIympics sub-forum The links @MiLLeNNiuM provided give you good (perhaps overly long) explanations of the current laws and interpretations. Even so it's just one side of the conversation. If it still seems unsatisfactory, you're not alone, because it begs the question why are the laws and interpretations currently the way they are? Because they don't make sense, unless we're supposed to simply accept them like the Commandments given to Moses on the Mountain. The conversation parallels in some crucial ways the controversy over a goal in the Premier League early in 2023. The current law and its interpretations came under question in the Referee Forum. That conversation is highly relevant and I quoted extensively (though by no means exhaustively) in the USA forum just a while ago. Here's one key quote from the Ref Forum thread a year-and-a-half ago (although the difference is that Marcus Rashford ran with the ball by his feet and Smith didn't):
