They can't televise the first round live? It should be on at times friendly to television stations in the US. I don't understand why they won't sell it to FSW or something. It really sucks.
FOX Sports World does not NEED the Gold Cup from a business perspective. It already has English Premier League and MLS in order to sustain itself. FOX Sports World is now a mature business and it no longer needs to spend money on that many products. It has EPL and MLS. That's all it needs. The first US match is against El Salvador, which makes good money via closed-circuit TV. As for the Martinique match: Galavision tentatively chose to take Guatemala vs Jamaica instead, though that should change. Univision/Galavision will take 10 games live.
da_cfo, Does that mean there's a chance that we might see tape delayed US games on Galavision, Telefutura, or another Spanish TV channel? I can live w/no english coverage as long as there is spanish coverage. It's no coverage at all other than Pay TV that really pi--es me off.
FYI, Radio Unica will be covering the full tournament live, on stations in much of the US, and via internet streaming.
CC v PPV I think for closed-circuit rights you have to pay a ridiculous amount (more than $100), not the $20, that I'd be more than willing to pay to watch the first round games. My buds & I agree that Bruce Arena's eye was on the Gold CUp and not so much on the Confeds.
What does closed circuit mean? PPV? Does anybody have any info on what PPV serivces will broadcast these games?
Let's all take a moment to reflect on the idea of Ollie referring to MLS as an asset to Fox Sports World.
So Oliver you're basically saying we'll see the Martinique game on one of Univision/Galavision/Telefutura but it isn't likely we'll see the El Salvador game on anything but pay TV? In a way that makes sense, but when you think about it, wouldn't it be more viable to put the El Salvador game on one of those Spanish channels because of the fact that El Salvador is a Spanish speaking country? I was hoping both of these games would be on on of those three channels, this is kinda disappointing.
From a business perspective, MLS can deliver a bigger audience than niche international leagues such as Germany, France, Netherlands, etc., without the cost of a rights fee. EPL is still the bread and butter for FOX Sports World. FSWorld can survive as a business if it runs all EPL all the time during the winter, and air MLS and a ton of time buys (A-League, MISL, etc.) during the summer. Everything else falls into the "nice to have, but not necessary" category. I was surprised NOT to see MLS on FOX Sports World a year sooner. I had thought the deal would have been done in time for the 2002 season. Better late than never.
Something to cover The good thing about the MLS is it gives us something to go 'balls deep' on during the soccer 'off-season' so to speak. We on 'The FSW Report' LOVE the timing of the MLS season and have been pleasantly surprised by the soccer - it actually is pretty good - in the absence of everything else. Even we're getting tired of running Beckham 24-7...hahaha.
As expected, Galavision has made a switch. US vs Martinique will air LIVE on Galavision on Monday July 14 at 8:45pm ET/5:45pm PT.
USA is already in the Quarterfinals Just saw on soccertv.com: Sat Jul 19 12:00PM Pacific Sat Jul 19 01:00PM Mountain Sat Jul 19 02:00PM Central Sat Jul 19 03:00PM Eastern Length: 2 hr LIVE Univision CONCACAF Gold Cup/Copa Oro CONCACAF - Quarterfinal 1 United States vs TBA Does that mean the the US has convinced their first round foes to 'play dead'?? Just wondering.... ;-) http://www.soccertv.com/amer.cfm
Re: USA is already in the Quarterfinals The US will play in that quarterfinal slot regardless of whether it finishes 1st or 2nd in the group. Martinique will have to pull off an upset in order to disrupt the party.
Those living in San Diego can watch the games on channel 12 based out of TJ. The games may be blacked out on cable, but a set of good rabbit ears will get you the games. If not check channel 57 with rebroadcasts in TJ. It is a channel from Mexico City. Pretty sad what one has to do to get a little football fix.
....Hard to believe that the USA v El Salvador match won't at least be a PPV event; i think its an embarassment that USMNT games are not available on some TV format
Is galavision sort of a rare spanish channel? I ordered a spanish speaking package from my cable provider adelphia and its not part of it which seems a little bit odd to me if its a popular channel.

......i feel much better now knowing that the El Salvador match will be seen even if its delayed. Thanks for the tip Monster
