from today's (12 Nov 02) Soccer America MLS Confidential:

"A heavy backlog of Galaxy home games once its stadium is open will
probably result in the Gold Cup being held in the Northeast instead
of its traditional Florida and California venues. RFK Stadium,
Gillette and the Meadowlands are the MLS facilities likely to be used."

Having had the extreme pleasure of watching the gold cup in LA last year, um....I guess I'd go.

It's really a goof of a tournament, slightly more serious than the Nike Cup of course, but surely an intensity downgrade from the likes of the WC or even the confederations cup. The best part about last year was watching the teams pull up in huge buses (USA, Mexico, S.Korea), followed by Cuba in two rented Ford Econoline vans. No joke. And you think the USSF is under-funded...

I think the point about not having it in LA is that the Galaxatives are going to have to spend the first 8-10 or something games on the road, followed by a ton of home games in a row. If they have home games every 5-7 days, then you throw a 20 game tournament into town you are really saturating the market and dragging down the attendance for all of the events. Better to have it on the east coast while all of our teams are out of town playing the damn Galaxy. I would really love to have NYC host a USA-Mexico game, but I know that will end up in DC or something while NYC gets the massive Martinique - St. Vincent tilt. Imagine the lines at the ticket office...
