Yeah, zero vibe/WC excitement here in New York too. Maybe that will change once international travelers touch down in the city and the matches begin, but I'm not holding my breath.

Glad I booked that flight to Mexico on the 24th. Just wishing I booked it for two weeks earlier.

I am spending 8 days in mexico, just to feel the world cup vibes. I have zero expectation for my games in the US, and i will probably hate football once I attend my games there

 

Do you live in New York? I think we all get a different impression of the “vibe” and excitement in a city when we’re traveling to there (usually the case) versus seeing it in our home city. You arrive at the airport, which has big welcome signs, you stay at a hotel which is expecting World Cup guests and mingle with other World Cup visitors. It’s a different feel.

Also New York is simply too large. It swallows the World Cup whole. Most of the US host cities are.

 

Am sat in my hotel room relaxing after a bit of sightseeing in Mexico City.
Decided to do a check on the places I have booked.
I cancelled and rebooked my hotels in Seattle and Kansas and managed to save $1000 (over 8 nights). I checked because today was the last day before a cancellation would incur a penalty charge.
Not to be sniffed at.
Never mind the match tickets, the slump in visitors is paying dividends elsewhere.
Might be worth checking on that restaurant you had an eye on for any spare tables.

 

I think if you go in with low/zero expectations, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Lol. I think some cities will definitely have a better vibe than others and maybe more importantly is some specific neighborhoods or bars. About 10 years ago I landed in Dallas for work on a Sunday morning and went straight to an Arsenal bar to catch a big game they were in. I was talking with some arsenal season ticket holders who happened to be in Dallas that week and they were blown away by the atmosphere in the bar. They couldn't believe how hardcore the fans were singing all the songs, etc. But if you went to any other sports bar in Dallas that day you probably wouldn't even know a game was on.

So I guess my point is that there will be some known soccer hangouts where the vibe will be great but you have to find them because it may be drowned out by other places not as into it.

 

I agree with this. NYC is one of those places where a huge event is going on in one place (say Brooklyn) and you have no idea in Queens. London and LA are like that as well.
Also - there ARE other things going on in NYC. The big story there, sportwise, is Trump turning up for game 3 of the NBA finals. God help you if you are around MidTown when that happens.

 

Curious to know everyone’s thoughts on M3. Should I still be waiting to buy tickets? Prices have been kind of sitting at the $1000 mark, not sure if it’s gonna go lower than that tbh

 

There's a bunch of hotels available for jun 10-12 in mexico city for 60-80 USD / night, this was unheard of months ago

 

Low expectations is my life motto lol. Everything is better with low expectations.

If my team was playing in Mexico I would definitley go.

 

The hotels allocated to Morocco, Senegal from what I saw are a step up from motel 6. The buses are super outdated. It is actually what has been the talk of fans and media back in Morocco. People do not realize how much we fell behind in terms of infrastructure and standards here in the US.

I was just in NYC and NJ....Newark along with the train that takes you to NYC is an embarrassment.

 

Nothing looks to be going higher, the trend is in the other direction across the board.

 

The RTTs have started to arrive in my group's accounts. Opening matches seating stuck away in the corners so I am told by friends. So, not good.

On the other hand, our group has received our tix for Haiti v Scotland and Turkey v Australia. All our tickets are along the sideline between the penality boxes. So we are pretty happy with that. Augurs well for our other matches as none of them are high demand.

nyc is old... can't compete with those new Qatar trains haha. Bright line in Florida is alright tho. Bart in the Bay area has newish trains.

If the World Cup was in London you would know about it everywhere. Sao Paulo is a big city. The World Cup wasn't hidden there 12 years ago. If a city is hosting the most popular sport in that country then that sport will take over. It will be on in every bar that has a TV. There will be no avoiding the World Cup in Madrid in 4 years.

If there is no buzz in New York it is because most of the population don't care. They probably haven't bothered to put World Cup branding everywhere either, unlike other countries. Those attending matches will be a tiny proportion of the people in any major city. It is the people without tickets watching in bars or at fan parks that create most of the buzz. Flight and accommodation prices have also put off many international visitors and that will reduce the buzz further.

 

Still anything is better than the relentless monotone barking of U..S..A..that has been round for years and seems to be the only song whatever the sport or indeed political rally.

Mexico City had World Cup wall paper everywhere courtesy of Coca Cola from the historic Center to Xochimilco... dunno if all the other ad related soccer stuff was just normal... Insurgentes metro and bus stop had a mini soccer indoor arena and murals on the walls ... The walkway to Juarez was still being painted with the different flags from around the world... Chapultapec Park entrance had soccer fan art from around the world courtesy of Visa (still cool tho). A couple cool dedicated soccer experiences one in Polanco and another close to UNAM.

In contrast Vegas just had a gift shop in terminal 3 with $30 World Cup pins lol. Did have fun with the Caesar's sports book machines... Like 300 different bets you can make.

Haven't been to SF... But SFO did have welcome soccer fans signs on the air tram.

Still 5 more days. We just need to warm up a little. World Cup fever will probably peak when USA wins in Seattle on July 6

I wouldn’t call US supporters “Ultras” . It’s mostly soccer moms and dads. But The US will have plenty of support. It’ll be evident today in Chicago when we beat the Germans.

 

I must admit US had suprisingly good success in the past world cups, considering how ridiculous the football in the USA is. Probbaly something to do with US sport mentality in general.
