And Sadly 2030 will be even worse with the opening matches in South America and rest of the tournament in Por/Spa/Mor. We won't (maybe) have another true WC until maybe Saudi 2034(2035?). I hope 2038 is AUS/NZ
You said it. Because the SF Bay Area didn’t get a marquee group stage matchup, I might go to some random group game like Jordan v. Algeria just to watch a WC game in person. But…the ticket price would have to be cheap, like $ 25 per person cheap. I’m not paying $100+ to watch two teams I don’t care about. Having an in-person WC experience is not worth paying $$$.
Hi maz , nice to see you since brazil, already booked everyhting, 2 flights Lisbon miami and miami lisbon, 3 nights in miami, flight miami to houston, and a RV 5 nights to come from houston to miami again, we are 8 , total cost of everything per person 3000€ . Everything booked in the night of the draw. Spend much more in qatar, damn alcool price
It is a spectacle with opening ceremonies. First World Cup match here since ‘94. It is going to be like nothing we have ever seen before in any sport.
we wont see this in 2030. maybe in the South American openers; but this wont happen in europe. FIFA is doing this because it's culturally acceptable and expected in North America.
We have seen ceremonies before. It all depends on how many people are willing to pay a huge premium for ceremonies compared to spending their money on any other game.
Like a few others on here I got caught with applying for only one game as I didn't realise you do ALL the ticket selections first and only then complete. I'd immediately received the confirmation from Fifa that my application was received but by then it was the wee hours in Asia. Went in this morning and (nervously!) cancelled, redid everything with a message saying it was successful. However no email this time round to confirm anything. Hopefully nothing other than a delay in the system this time round.
We've literally had World Cup opening ceremonies before. Though in all the World Cups I've watched, the only specific things I remember from opening ceremonies are Ricky Martin singing "The Cup of Life" in France and that floating ghost thing in Qatar. In comparison, I can remember a lot of things from Olympic opening ceremonies. The difference is that Olympic ceremonies are designed for an audience that specifically wants to see ceremonies, while the World Cup will have people who just want to see the game and have to pay the ceremony premium.
Agree with you here. Been to past 4 WCs and the increase in this one is at least 3x with the new dynamic pricing (compared to previous increases of typically less than 20-30%). I applied to all the matches I wanted to go to with my family of 3 and it came out to $80k, more than $25k per person when typically we would have spent about $7k. Crazy! On the brightside, I hope the high prices turn away scalpers, as I can't imagine prices going up much higher than they currently are at face value. I am almost tempted to wait to buy the SFs and Final as any elimination of a big team like Arg, Bra, Eng, etc, will surely bring down prices.
The 90s are different that now. Don't try to compare. This is way different and people want to see this from all over the World. More than 70K want to be a part of this out of the millions and millions of fans here. Supply is very small compared to the demand.
Meh, I’m skeptical. The Qatar opening ceremony was impressive (sort of like an Olympics one). But usually it’s just some very brief concert, some people running around with flags, and a few fireworks. Mostly ignored by TV and half the people in the stadium. Will they even have time to show it on TV? The Canada match is going on from 3-5pm PT and the US match kicks off at 6pm PT.
This is Southern California where Hollywood and production companies are going to try and put their all into it. This is going to be different.
This... I'm gonna buy tickets for one game just to make sure we get our pins lol. The rest I can wait for a day when people historically are out of $ and not looking for tickets.
Perhaps, we shall see. I’m just not sure people will actually pay that much for it. It’s still mostly just a group stage soccer game.
They already are paying that much for it. It is the Opener of the World Cup. It is not just any Group stage match. We have been waiting for this moment for decades.
What is the evidence that there is a huge demand for the ceremony? The World Cup's supply also includes 101 non-opener games.
It is the whole package. All the pageantry and tradition and circus like atmosphere. It is Southern California which is a very diverse population with immigrants and ex-pats from all around the World. It is not just for the ceremony but it is a factor.
