Fifa says the linked ticket feature will not work with transfered or tickets purchased on resale. Idk if that means that you cant tie tickets you didnt purchase or that those original ties wont apply. But we will see.

 

No it wont let you cart more if you have 4. It must be a glitch so be carefull if your account is holding more than 4 you are violating the terms.

What is "criminal" for some...is "rightful access" to many many others. Not everyone can drop everything three times a day scrambling for a handful of tickets; those other people feel that a convenience fee is a just way to reward themselves and all their "hard work" with access to an event.

Well, not to agree with Gianni...but I do not know how FIFA prevents rampant scalping in the United States. (May have had some success in Canada.) To the point that the meager attempt to force an account holder to retain at least one ticket (Qatar '22) probably is ruled unlawful in at least one state. And a $100 burner phone is a small price to pay for just about every single ticket being offered. So the question for you is simple: Who should get World Cup ticket revenue - largely anonymous scalpers whose career or business model is to prey on the weak, or FIFA?

They can't even stop the scalpers in Mexico where FIFA is sort of doing what you've asked for. I guess we won't know how many "World" fans will get tickets directly from FIFA in Mexico until June, but I doubt it'll be 80% of the tickets on offer. Maybe 25%? It probably won't be a ton of Mexican residents...just as they've suffered through years of American residents enjoying El Tri, they may face the insult of hosting American residents coming "home" to watch games in Azteca and Akron. If that's the definition of success...I'll take the failure of Canada and the U.S. I guess.

 

Interesting that:
- all games in Vancouver & Toronto, Mexico City & Guadalajara & Monterrey have been repriced up
- all games with MEX, CAN and USA have been priced up EXCEPT game M4 USA game in LA which was grossly overvalued to start with.

The question for me is the morality of the event organiser, which has up to now been an uber critic of the practice, embracing it and profiting from it.

Yes they are just the facilitator, and individuals could list at close to FV if they wanted to on the FIFA resale site, but, for me, it's the wrong thing for them to do. YMMV.

 

I think they could kill the secondary market entirely if they really wanted to. There’s no secondary market for airplane tickets! So all it takes is (i) personalized tickets, and (ii) actual enforcement (even if you don’t check every ticket but just 1 out of 3, 10 etc.). If there was a real risk that you don’t get into the stadium because your name is not on the ticket and someone might actually check your passport, you’d think twice about secondary purchases. I’m not saying I’d like it that way, but FIFA telling us “we can’t kill the secondary market so instead we have our own resale platform with 30% fees” is just BS in my view.

EDIT: And before someone says “there’s no way you can check passports for 50-80,000 people in the couple hours before a game starts”, I’ve used several apps for visa applications or passport extensions that made me scan my passport and take a selfie which was then checked against my passport photo. So I’m sure they could come up with some clever technical solutions. Again, that’s if they wanted to.

Mmm, but this is not a purchase — it’s a transfer. Even for Euro 2024, I was able to transfer 5 tickets together to my cousin and his family for the semi-final. He had all 5 tickets on his mobile. I understand that this isn’t possible when buying from the FIFA resale market, but it is possible for a transfer. An account that receives transferred tickets doesn’t seem to follow the same rules as for a purchase.

Apparently there's millions of American citizens walking around without IDs since there's no requirement for Americans to carry IDs. We're still a "free country" lol . good luck implementing ID checks in the US.

 

Right, it’s not implementable in the US for the reasons you said. But that aside (and for past/future World Cups in other locations), mandatory ID checks/ticket name registration would be way more trouble than it’s worth for FIFA except for a very few select matches. For both the expense involved and the drama and negative headlines. And it would also be an impediment to tickets sales (especially during the pre-draw phases) if the buyer will be stuck with non-transferable tickets.

That said, it’s not impossible. Taylor Swift’s concerts in Europe required matching IDs for the tickets and were non-transferable except by notarized letter. And I’ve been to at least one concert in the US where there were no tickets at all and you had to swipe the original credit card used for purchase and get a wristband to go inside.

But for FIFA, the demand varies widely across the matches and they don’t want to put barriers in place that will make it harder for people to buy or attend the matches. And they care even less about scalpers now, since they’ve got their own resale platform to cash in.
