    The Etch Blurb:

"Former United captain Marco Etcheverry, who recently returned to the area after playing for Bolivar in his native Bolivia this spring, watched practice yesterday. Etcheverry will represent Bolivia in a seniors tournament in Dallas this week, but otherwise, he said his playing career is over and he's looking forward to working for the Bolivian soccer federation.

United officials are planning to honor Etcheverry at a game late this season. . . . "

I hope I am wrong, but it sounds like DCU front office might be weaseling out of doing that testimonial match for Marco.

    Its the wording of

"United officials are planning to honor Etcheverry ***at a game*** late this season. . . . "

    that unnerves me.

This sounds to me like all they are planning is some boring, 'bring Etch out at halftime of a DCU game, give him a plaque, he waves, everybody claps, and done' kind of thing. I certainly hope they are planning a testimonial match. But this article supplies me no encouragement to that effect.

Why did Dema feel overwhelmed? You'd think he'd never been in a stadium only 1/3 filled before...

Jesus dude, calm down. There is 2/3 of a season left and I'm sure the club wants to due the thing right.

For me Goff's speculation that if Sanneh were to sign with MLS that C-bus and Dallas might have the inside track since they are the two teams with allocations still. That bothers me since we didn't get any compensation for Tony leaving in the first place. But really the thing that will drive where Sanneh plays ultimately will be his salary driving the team that gets him to trade a player(s) to afford him. Thus I could imagine DCU trading for an allocation. Maybe Dallas will get Stewart after all?

I'm sure Sanneh will want to say which team he wants to play for if he does sign with MLS. Really though, I think he'll sign another Euro contract again. He should be nice insurance for many teams over there at a nice price for them.

Way to go Hristo! Two goals... Friendly or not, that would tie him with our top scorer right? :D

--I like to crap on the front office as much as the next guy, but i didnt see anything wrong with the MArco comments. They will do the rigth thing with him. Even if the game occured after the season (which i prefer anyway if it is only symbolic) we will get something in for Diablo.

(if we dont i'll light the torches with the rioters :D )

Yeah, but the MLS stadiums that he plays in are so small that I'm just the article references the sheer size of the Nou Camp.

[Those of you who watched the DC at Tottenham win know what I'm talking about]

Why would we have, he was a second-rate midfielder who left after his contract was out because we didn't think he was worth giving a raise to. That would be like expecting compensation for Joey Theiman. But then I can't figure out how a team holds onto a guy's "rights" after he has no contract and goes elsewhere to play anyway. I say either team can have him, they will be fighting for last place anyway.

You guys who are upset about the Marco thing read that paragraph way differently than I did ...... Kevin said at the annual SE meeting that because they wanted to do something fitting for Marco's contributions, it would probably be late in the season, they have a full schedule.

Yeah, there's a big difference between "at a game" (bad idea) and "with a game" (good idea).

Ha - good one. That was a joke right? Couldn't possibly be serious.

As far as his return- after all his injuries, I doubt he'd be worth the money he would command. Isn't he about the same age as Marco? I'd put as top 4 all-time players on DC with Marco, Jaime and Harkes. Maybe Goose too.

Oh - and Marco in a "seniors" tournament? Oh jeez that's depressing since he's 33 and five years younger than me. Can I get a 10% discount on hot dogs and Foggy Bottoms at RFK?

No, but you can drive to RFK with your blinker on the whole time.

Dallas wont take Sanneh even if we have the allocation and cap room. We have more quality defenders than we have playing time. I think Sanneh should and would go back to DC if he signed with MLS again that's where he belongs. Stern John on the other hand I think he might wind up in Dallas we need a good stirker.

According to Kevin Payne DC hope to have a testimonial match for Marco but the details have not yet been worked out.
