http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A7455-2003Jan17.html Deal for Hristo is set. Will cost us a 2 or 3 round 2004 pick (hopefully #3). Goff seems to agree with Tron about Carroll. GM
Well it's nice to see what we will give for Hristo is similar to what the Revs gave for Nowak. Actually I'd hope that Hristo costs us the second rounder since that would mean that he contributed more than expected- a substantial amount. His main problem the last two years has been injuries. If he can play relatively injury free then we got a steal. We can't expect any second round pick to have much of an impact their first year as a rule in MLS. Next year is purely developmental for Carroll.
I'm much more comfortable about giving up a 2nd or 3rd rounder next year rather than this year. While last year's draft was a little light on talent because of contraction, etc., this season's was flush with talent. Next year doesn't look to be as strong, and the only guy I want from next year's draft (assuming he comes out) wouldn't be available in the 2nd round anyway. With the addition of Eskandarian and Stokes, we've dded two quality young players. Our core next season will consist of young players Convey, Santino, Rimando, Nelsen, Esky and Stokes. They'll blend with the players in their primes like Reyes, Petke, Ivanov, Olsen, Prideaux, and Kovalenko. And, it will be led by the grizzled veterans Etch, Stewart, Hristo, and Harkes. I can live with that mix. Guys like Curtis, Namoff, Eliseo and Chino are all fighting for their roster spots. For these guys, expansion cannot come soon enough. -Tron
Having seen Swann play here against OSU... good to have him on our squad because he drives people crazy... physical and verbal... think Geoff Aunger with a really obnoxious side... between he and Petke you could have quite an acceptable checking line out there...
