From the DaMN: "Goalkeeper shortage: The league's complicated player allocation rules are putting the team in a goalkeeping bind. With Scott Garlick still two weeks from playing, at minimum, Jeff Cassar is the only real goalkeeper on Dallas' roster. Andrew Terris had been available but will now leave to be a backup at Columbus. Clarke said midfielder Carey Talley is the emergency backup – then joked that he had to go inform Talley about that." Oh boy.
They can't bring in someone from the PDL Tornadoes for a game? Or the Austin Lightning? Heck my teams keeper would be better than a random Burn field player.
Okay...well now my new nickname for Cassar - "Cardiac" - has additional meaning. He's likely to give me a heart attack for the following reasons: 1. Making that heart stoppingly good, but death defying save to keep us in the game 2. Venturing 30 yards out of goal and nearly giving up an empty netter (thanks for having no shot, Bobby) 3. He's an injury away from putting Talley in the nets Good ol' Cardiac Cassar......take care of yourself, man....we need you now more then ever.
Seriously, Can't the BURN bring someone else. Northside made mention to the Tornadoes & Lightning. MLS restrictions?
The loan deal with USL that allowed MLS teams in the past to bring in A-League, or PDL, goalkeepers died prior to last season. That is why the league has two "pool" goalkeeper, of which Terris is one. Terris was with Metro for a stint, then Dallas, now Columbus... as to why he has to go to C-Bus and not stay here I do not know. Maybe there is a two week rule or somthing if more than one team needs him. Matt Jordan is hurt in C-Bus. Bottom line you can NOT call up a keeper. The only way to get another one is to SIGN one. That would mean making a roster move and dumping a player. I am sure everyone can think of a name on either developmental or on regular roster they would want dumped, but I guess Clarke does not agree with that. I certainly feel that losing a player just to have a goalkeeper sit on the bench for a week is not a good idea. Garlick got his cast off his ankle this week anyway. So I am sure he will be ready next week. You could get roster and cap relief to sign a player if one of your GKs went on season ending DL, or so I understand. But that is not the case here.
I think MLS would be willing to give DAL a keeper if they're down to one. Didn't Peter Billmeyer sit on the DAL bench earlier this season? Where is he now? I doubt they'd make you drop a player for a short term replacement. But the regulations on mlsnet are a bit out of date, so who knows.
I doubt Warren would go for the job, but interesting. Yikes. Not looking like there is a replacement yet. http://www.mlsnet.com/pdf/703kcdal.pdf Is Garlick available in an emergency? It seems MLS only has 2 rent-a-goalies. Where's Billmeyer? I'm thinking the special GK DEV spot idea might be worthwile though Bradley might use it on Gaven. I like uniformity but the extra GK sub rule had potential if it was enforcable. Backup GK is a horrible job and rarely allows for playing time (reserve sides might help this) thus stifling development of young players.
He did, but he was not signed anywhere at the time, maybe he is playing somewhere now or something. The question was about call ups and the Burn can't call anyone up. Maybe they will bring back Billmeyer again. There must be some kind of exemption to sign a short term emergency goalkeeper if one of the pool keepers is out...becasue you for sure can't do that with a field player. Jasin Kreis was always the emergency GK in the past. I guess it's Talley now.
I agree there must be some exception. MLS policy for some time has allowed replacement players for <2 keepers and <16 field players, but recently it doesn't seem like any team has been able to add any emergency "field players". With 6 DEV slots it should be huge issue though several teams have had empty spots on benches this year. So Billmeyer was a "very special case" it seems and Terris must now be on a league wide contract? Noticed that DAL got Terris this week and CLB saturday and NE sunday both got Baumstark. What will happen with all 3 playing on the same day! I'm becoming more in favor of an extra DEV spot to ensure 3rd GK's on teams that can be loaned to USL teams. Still wasn't enough for NE this week though with 2 hurt.
What we need is for the teams to be in control of their own personel decisions so if need be they can sign guys to say a 4 week contract or something. We also need to clear up get/get rid of this discovery process.
