I get what you are trying to say, but I think it’s wrong to assume that GC% is a better measure of a player’s true quality just because it stays “stable” across teams or eras. Stability alone doesn’t mean a stat reflects individual ability. It just means the stat is insensitive to the player’s actual production. GC% depends heavily on how much the team scores without him, not on what he directly contributes. A player in a weaker team could look artificially better on GC% simply because his teammates score less independently. Let me illustrate this with an example. Imagine Player A in a team that scores very few goals independently, and Player B in a team that scores many goals without him. Player A and Player B both produce exactly the same goals and assists per match. GC% will make Player A look “better” than Player B, even though their actual individual output is identical. So stability across eras or teams doesn’t tell us who the player actually is. It only tells us about the performance of the teams around him. Put another way: G/A may vary depending on teammates, tactics, or era, but it reflects the player’s direct output. That variation is meaningful, because it captures the player’s actual contribution per match. GC%, on the other hand, masks the differences in production by shifting the baseline according to team scoring. If we want to compare players across eras in terms of individual quality, we should care about what they actually did per match, not how stable the surrounding context makes their percentage look.

Again you are equating individual output in ga with individual ability. Lets play this game. Lets make it concrete enough and say player A is Cristiano and player B is Bale. They are similar type of players to some extent. And lets say they both play right winger, the same role, the same dependany level, etc. Lets say they play in parallel universes in exactly the same team, the same great teammates: Benzema, Ribery, Modrić, etc.. and lets ignore comllimentarity and chemistry for this example. They all fit perfectly together in case of Cristiano and Bale. Now lets say that Cristianos and Bales G/A per game is exactly the same in both cases. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE is that in case of Cristiano, his teammates scored additional 0,8 goals per game, while in the case of Bale they scored 1,0 goals per game. Meaning that the same teammates, and everything else being the same, produced 0,2 goals per game less in the case of Cristiano. That makes gc% this: For Cristiano: Cristiano: 1,0 GC per game Teammates: 0,8 goals per game Team total: 1,0 + 0,8 = 1,8 goals per game Critiano gc%: 1,0 GC per game / 1,8 team goals = 56% For Bale: Bale: 1,0 GC per game Teammates: 1,0 goals per game Team: 2,0 goals per game Bale gc%: 50% Now, who is more impressive in this case? ... After you answer that, you can answer was Gyokeres a better player the last season when he had 64 GC in 49 games than Haaland in his treble winning team (2023 season) when he had 61 GC in 53 games? Individual stats suggest he was. So what is about that?

If in your hypothetical scenario Ronaldo and Bale registered the exact same number of goals and assists playing for different teams with the only caveat being that Ronaldo’s teams scored significantly less than Gareth Bales then yes Ronaldo’s statistics would be more impressive Provided that Ronaldo and bale played in the same league,at the same time, against the same defences and in games officiated by the exact same referees But your hypothetical doesn’t map neatly to reality because unlike Ronaldo and Bale playing under identical conditions Gyökeres 24/25 and Haaland 22/23 did not play in identical environments. There’s no clearer measure of whether players are in identical environments than the quality of opposition they face. If Gyökeres posts slightly higher raw goal contributions in Portugal than Haaland did in the Premier League that doesn’t automatically mean he was the “better player” or had the “better season.” Context is everything League quality, strength of defenses, teammates, competition level and what those goals translated to in terms of trophies. Maradona’s fans (the biggest ones on this thread) hate winning, they hate trophies and they hate longevity because their idol only won 4 major trophies in his career, their idol never won fairly and their idol was a completely washed up player by 29 years old.

Yes, I think it's best that you don't try to make adjustments, so that you keep your formula and results factual (or at least a good estimation - there has to be some question on some assists of course for various players, due to using match reports and/or lacking some verified data etc). But at the same time, factual doesn't mean perfect for an indicator of individual quality/effectiveness. Using a coin flipping analogy, I would change it to a dice analogy, where the Hungary dice has somewhat more chance of landing on a Hidegkuti, Kocsis, Czibor or Bozsik (and ditto the 'assister dice') than the Italy one does on a Baggio team-mate with Italy (and similar can be said re: Honved as compared to Fiorentina, Bologna, Brescia, even Juventus probably). But I don't think this factor would be close to as strong as the era/league factor that means Puskas has bigger goal/assist tallies (the capability of his team-mates even enhancing that) so yeah GC% should surely be a fairer or more accurate way to attempt a comparison between them than G/A per game anyway (or it needs less of a caveat in effect I guess).

Yes, I think, like I said to Trachta, that GC% as a factual calculation (with some questions on assist totals or margin for error in some cases) is a valid stat for sure. I think it would be closer than raw G/A per game data if using it as a guide list to great attacking players through the eras, but it still shouldn't be seen as a definitive unarguable guide (I'm not really sure Trachta suggests this, and I'm pretty sure you don't anyway though).

On that hypothetical scenario I would see both as equally impressive as both are on the same context and producing the same output. Teammates of Ronaldo scoring less goals doesn't make him better than Bale who's having the exact same output. On Gyokeres yeah, I think he had so many G/A because he played on a weaker league. Haaland is far more impressive because he did it on the strongest league in the world while Gyokeres did it on the 6th/7th strongest european league.
At international level I don’t think anyone would dispute that Kylian Mbappe is a better performer for France than Thierry Henry At international level Anyone arguing against this wouldn’t be doing so in good faith IMO Club level is a different discussion I think Mbappe has now surpassed Henry but I won’t strongly disagree with someone who thought otherwise.
