http://news.independent.co.uk/world/environment/story.jsp?story=334379 "The costs were said to have been caused by contamination of crops, subsidies paid to compensate for low prices and lost trade from manufacturers in Europe that refused GM products – and the complete recall of one product".
Pretty useless article and study. This article (and possibly the study itself) failed to mention the benefits of GM crops that might possibly offset the costs. Pretty tough to evaluate with only one side of the equation.
here's a summary of the report.http://www.soilassociation.org/sa/saweb.nsf/librarytitles/seedsofdoubt_summary.html
Thanks for that link. It is a bit surprising to read that the use of herbicide has increased with GM crops. Also interesting to see the point about farm subsidies increasing because of the decreased demand world-wide for American farm products. I would like to get the whole report but it is a bit expensive. I wonder if the biotech industry will reply or ignore this and hope the mainstream media don't pick it up. Thanks again CFnwside.
