Guyana and Suriname do not want to be a part of CONMEBOL. They feel more Caribbean culturally and politically.
Going back to the Copa America... ...I am hearing rumors being spread by Colombian media that there could be a Special Copa America that determines the World Cup Qualifiers 2030. The Matches could take place in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay to give them preparation for the World Cup. Or the matches can be played in Spain/Portugal/Morocco. Sounds crazy but interesting.
Nah. They would have to get approval from the CONCACAF to leave which would never happen. They would have to get approval from CONMEBOL to join which would never happen.
It would give conmebol 12 nations. No need to add members from other confederations for the copa america. Plus world cup qualifying could be split into two groups of 6.
Ask Conmebol to list their preferred guests for rounding out a 12-team Copa América field and the Guyanas don't show up in the Top 50
Time zone? I got news for you, not even Israel is playing home matches these days... Sure seems that way doesn't it? But back-to-back tournaments in the USA would be simply appalling. As would yet another "calendar/player release protection" for Concacaf teams without a reduction in Gold Cups. But I suppose anything is possible with the "leadership" at Conmebol and FIFA.
I guess I could see ARG, URU, PAR cohost the Copa. I wouldn't say its needed to prepare for the WC (unless something changes and they end up hosting more than 1 match each). But its about the only way PAR or URU could host a Copa (or cohost with Brazil). I don't think Bolivia v Uruguay in the Bernabeu is good preparation for the WC. And why would CONMEBOL care that Spain is well prepared to host the WC? That part of the rumor is clearly nonsense.
They would probably select stadiums in Spain that are smaller and the people want to see some good International football. There have been friendlies that have drawn decent crowds. playing at Deportivo de La Caruna's stadium would be perfect fit for a game like Uruguay- Bolivia. Or Las Palmas.
It is being reported that representatives from UEFA, and CONMEBOL along with the Federation presidents of Argentina and Spain discussed details for the Finalissima during the FIFA congress in Paraguay. Nothing has been agreed to yet but they are not denying that the match will take place so that is encouraging. My guess is maybe it will be played in March? In my opinion it should be in Brasil or somewhere like that but probably will be in Europe again.
March, depending on Spain qualifying directly to the World Cup. If they slip up and have to go through the WCQ playoffs (which they'd be guaranteed to do at the very least as a Nations League group winner), then there would be no available dates until 2027.
The traditional May meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee next Wednesday will decide the format of the European Qualifiers for EURO 2028 which will feature four hosts (England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland Republic).
The big question being how they'll accommodate the Nations League quarterfinals... I have to admit, for this WCQ, it ended up going a lot smoother than I expected.
Pretty weird in the last scenario for four teams to actually get eliminated because one more spot became available in the final tournament. Why not just have four paths of three teams each, with the seeded team getting a bye to the final and two unseeded sides playing in the semi-final of each path?
The big tournament in the United States starts tonight: Mexico vs. Dominican Republic in the opener in Los Angeles. I'll be at USA vs. T&T tomorrow in San Jose.
Yes it was. Mexico hanging on at the end. It was a proper match. Concacaf seems to be experiencing what CAF went through over a decade ago when the smaller teams have greatly increased in ability.
