Since both Cups are in the USA, it is physically possible for him to play in both as long as they do not time conflict. Clubs are in multiple competitions, why not players?
Getting closer to the version of the simulation where Sebastian Berhalter is on the 2026 World Cup roster and Gio Reyna is not.
Honestly, I think it will be more awkward if they both end up in the same national team camp at some point. It seems like their friendship is about as strained as that of their parents these days.
I think we're making assumptions about any relationship between Gio and Sebastian Berhalter. Strained, good, or nonexistent. We don't know. I mean, Sebastian Berhalter recently dedicated one of his performances to Gio's brother Jack. Next to a picture of them as boys he wrote: "I wish I didn't have to describe our friendship in a picture but, keep looking over us. RIP Jack Reyna The relationship between these two families is so convoluted. Does that sound like a comment made by somebody wanting to feud with the Reynas?
In a recent interview with the Athletic Seb said he and Gio used to be close but they haven't talked since the World Cup fall out.
What was said precisely https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/63...t-vancouver-whitecaps-concacaf-champions-cup/ Given their similar ages and parents’ friendship, Sebastian and Gio (who is roughly 18 months younger) grew up as friends. When asked if he and Gio have spoken about the saga, or if their relationship is in a better place, Sebastian simply said “no,” not displaying a desire to elaborate. Now if they were both called into camp I assume they’d find a way to get to an ok place. For one whatever did happen was done by Gio’s parents not Gio himself. And if Gregg Berhalter and Gio can get to an ok place I’m sure Sebastian Berhalter and Gio can too.
I made that post here a few months ago and it was so hurtful to some that someone reported it and it got taken down.
I am a Gio homer….but the dudes played like 50 minutes all year. If there’s anyone who could handle both…it’s him.
I'm gonna take a wild guess--just based on posting history on this subject--that you said more than "Berhalter might make the '26 WC and not Reyna".
None really…although relative to the competition that was called up I think that’s 50 more minutes than anyone else would ever get at a club the caliber of Dortmund. So there is some nuance here. But I will point out that I was responding to a post that justified his exclusion based on wear and tear on the body. Which in Gio’s case is a bit preposterous
Zing! Honestly, that's funny! Some of our Americans that love soccer. You would think someone had kicked their dog.
Probably had more to do with his 7 goals and 5 assist in ~700 minutes in a U.S. shirt. But sure, let’s act like Gio never produced on the actual level and Seb’s brief run of form in MLS compares to that.
Its as if people don't remember that Gio Reyna was named Player of the Tournament at the 2024 Nations League. Scored in the quarterfinal 1st leg against T&T. [We were ponderous until he came on.] Had two assists against Jamaica in the semifinal and scored in the final against Mexico. Also.......................at least the relationship between Gregg Berhalter and Gio seemed fine. They worked it out and the World Cup problems seemed like water under the bridge. One can argue that no coach has shown more faith in Gio over the last couple of years than Gregg Berhalter. He'd became a key player for the USMNT after returning from a broken leg in the fall of 2023 thru Berhalter's firing after Copa America. When people talk about the relationship between the Berhalters and Reynas, all I can say for sure is that "it's complicated."
Berhalter gave that kid more than any coach in his history, and Gio’s family tried to reward that by destroying the national team while Berhalter was coaching. Gio literally was not fit, was not willing to get fit, and Berhalter brought him anyway. Berhalter’s bad end came because he brought/bought in to Gio. It’s a Shakespearean tragedy. Sebastian Berhalter said that he himself has not seen or talked to Gio since that incident after having been close for their whole lives. Pretty gross stuff from the Reynas. It doesn’t get much uglier than that.
