    So Cal
Are you saying Reyna can't play defense and win balls, but Tillman can? I won't disagree about Tillman, but I think Reyna can definitely play defense. If that make him a like for like, than I would say he's like for like.

My view on Reyna is that his ability to play defense is severely underrated. He has shown that he can play defense and win balls if he wants to. I haven't watched him recently with Dortmund...truthfully, no one really has :( but I have definitely seen it at times with USMNT.

Does he want to play? If he does, I believe he has matured to the point where he knows he has to play defense

I think he wants to play. His main barrier is simply health. My guess is that you agree on that.

They’re similar in age, position, big club pedigree and nationality.

Malik plays more games at a lower level, while Gio is still fighting to stay at the top level. Will be an interesting comparison for the rest of their careers, but Gio has always seemed to be the better player.

I said no such thing. The fact is that ball winning is a Tillman strength, just look at his numbers as a pro. Compare them to Reyna's if you like.

Tillman is ranked #2 in all UCL by WS at 8.03 because he tops in chances created, has 3G and 2 A, and is top 3 in tackles + interception at 5 total. Tillman also leads PSV in T&I, he is a two way player and his future is as a two way player . Tillman when he was a Bayern youth player said his idol was Paul Pogba and that is Malik's prototype, a tall 2 way CM with an eye for a pass. Bellingham at Dortmund is a contemporary example. Tillman is not the 1v1 attacker that Reyna is so will you complain that Tillman can't attack?

Reyna is an attacking midfielder. He is more comparable to Wirth, Musiala, Xavi Simmons, ... No one would suggest that Reyna and Bellingham are like for like.

Tillman is to Pogba as Reyna is to Debruyne…they’ve been compared for years. Hopefully the same will be true of our yanks.

You can compare any two players as like for like I guess but Pogba and KDB are just not like for like.

Did you compare Bellingham as like for like with Reyna when they both played at Dortmund? To me they are different types of players who play different roles.

If a team is looking for a box to box midfielder they would take Tillman over Reyna. If they are looking for an attacking midfielder, especially in a 4-2-3-1 you would take Reyna in any of the -3- roles over Tillman.

    Depends the role--

    holding mid: Tillman
    deep-lying playmaker: Reyna
    box-to-box: Tillman
    roaming playmaker: Reyna
a-mid who can carry his own water: Tillman
a-mid who can be that field general: Reyna
    two-way wide player: Tillman
wide player in James Rodriguez role: Reyna

I've very surprised to see Nuri Sahin turning to Reyna given that he has all these bad qualities and habits that need to be coached out of him.

I have this habit of seeing a player playing one sport and imagining how he would do in another sport. With that being said, I imagine that Reyna would be an excellent point guard in basketball.

    Screamer.
Almost 2 years since his last goal for Dortmund, didn’t realize it had been that long (edit: May ‘23)

Wouldn't have to imagine, I'd actually watch him in that case. Haven't watched the Bundesliga since the move to ESPN+ unfortunately.
