Giovanni “Gio” Reyna US National Team Discussion

Gio has had 5,372 minutes across all comps with the Dortmund and Forest. For his age and injury history, he has garnered plenty of minutes at very high levels. Some of the comments on the player have been delusional or deranged.

As the man said "the cemeteries are full of those who were once thought indispensable."

And someone who has the ability but not the will to succeed is dispensable to begin with.

A team with replacements can swap out someone like that fairly easily, but a team that doesn't must. Otherwise that player's lack of workrate and tactical discipline leaves less gifted team mates exposed, while his lack of commitment infects the dressing room.

As for names, Brenden Aaronson, Luca de la Torre, Aidan Morris, maybe Paaxten Arronson down the line. Tessmann if pushed: not really a CAM, but real physical presence and attacking instincts.

The top CAMs in the pool are Reyna, Tillman, and Diego Luna.

I've always enjoyed your posts except on this one topic.

Not that you should give a rat's ass about my opinion, but ... I don't know where you come up with this stuff.

Put him on PSV and he's a world beater. But he'd still be the same player, and plenty good enough for the USMNT

DLDT is a CM. I forgot Brenden Aaronson. So B.Aaronson, M.Tillman, Gio, and Diego Luna.

That’s fine, we don’t have to agree. I enjoy your posts as well.

I don’t know if he’d be good at PSV. He was poor at Nottingham Forest.

Its really tough to say because there’s not really a good track record for Gio since the year before Haaland left. Reyna was injured in 2021 and has been a bit part player ever since. We are in the 24-25 season.

And these are Reyna replacements in your opinion?

When started in central positions, Gio had 5 goals and 4 assists in 1200 minutes of league play for Dortmund. When fit, he clearly had a 'track record'.

Reyna also has a track record in the Nations League, in that he played a pretty big role in the US winning all 3 Nations League trophies... perhaps bigger than any other player but certainly bigger than any other player in terms of key goal contributions in the semifinals or finals.

None of us know anything about Reyna's "will to succeed." If we're going to speculate about it, I'd say that repeatedly returning from injuries and then throwing a fit in Qatar when told he wouldn't start both suggest that he's plenty headstrong or even willful.

What makes you think that he is not trying his ass off in training and still not getting many minutes?

We don't know anything about Gio Reyna, other than what's been reported in the media. The rest is all speculation.

All we should be commenting on is what's happening on the pitch. Not a lot of minutes recently.

He's shown off his talent in patches for the NT but I'm still not sure where he fits or whether he's worth building a system around.

Berhalter really built his defense around Adams and his attack around Pulisic. Is Gio at that level?

Watching him at Forest last season for one: get on the ball, make no impact, lose it, don't track back, don't cover. Rinse and repeat.

Then there's the abundance of PT in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. The only reasons for not getting PT now is that he's never fully recovered from his injuries, for which there's no evidence, or that the coach doesn't like what he's seeing in training

Injuries are seldom a player's fault, but they still make it hard for them to progress, especially when they're still far from a finished product. Gio's still young and has time, but more injuries and more lack of playing time sure don't help anything. His career has had a serious lack of consistency for a variety of reasons for the last 2-3 years. Until that changes, he's just not going to make a ton of progress. For a while he felt on the cusp of being more than a prospect, but at this point, he still feels like a young player that's shown flashes but never been able to be a consistent difference maker at a high level. He can still come in and look good against CONCACAF teams and against lesser competition when healthy. But I don't think he is a better player today than he was in 2022 and for a guy still only 21, that's not good. I hope this injury is something quick that doesn't keep him off the field for too long.

It'll be Tilman. Another window lost. Gio with the strain after jumping off the plane and showing how eager he is to please. Poch just got his first lesson. On second thought, I imagine Poch is pretty familiar with the T/A flight thing, especially since he is Argentine.

I actually wonder how injured he is here. No Pochettino, and he's fighting for PT with Dortmund. This could have been a joint decision, or, given his dad's track record, something he chose.

We'll see if he's out for long with Dortmund.

Well that, and p!ssing off a manager or two,
p!ssing off the fans of his club,
and I think there was an on field row or two.

    Did I miss anything?

I mean, who WOULDN'T fall all over themselves to demand such a [snicker] "gem" in their team?
